How It Happened
The first 15 minutes of Saturday's First Round was a scoreless battle with each team putting one shot on goal. The Jumbos attempted three total shots in the period while Messiah's best look came in the eighth minute when an Ashlyn Smith shot off a corner got past the keeper, but a defensive save from Jackie McCarthy kept the game scoreless.

Less than 30 seconds into the second period, Messiah earned a penalty corner and made good on the opportunity. An initial shot by Madi Johnson was blocked, but Kelsey Heltzel grabbed the rebound on the left side. Her shot hit off a defender and found the back of the cage to give Messiah the 1-0 lead just 40 seconds into the second quarter.

Four minutes later Heltzel had Messiah's only other shot of the period, but it was saved. Catie Brubaker was called upon to make three saves in the period and the 1-0 Messiah lead held through the half.

Midway through the third quarter, Messiah earned a penalty corner. Like Smith in the second quarter, Madi Johnson's shot was saved defensively, however a penalty stroke was awarded to the Falcons as Lauren Seubert lined up to take the shot. Seubert converted the stroke to make the game 2-0 Falcons. A couple minutes later, Tufts cut the deficit in half with a goal from Hannah Biccard as the game headed to the fourth quarter.

The Jumbos attempted to press and tie the game and had a golden opportunity early in the fourth quarter with a penalty stroke taken by Reegan McCloskey. Messiah goalkeeper Catie Brubaker came up with a huge save to kep the Jumbos at 1 as that score would remain for the rest of the quarter. The Falcons defense would hold on for the win 2-1.
