Field Hockey Earns Six All-Conference Honors

ANNVILLE, Pa. – On Wednesday morning, the Middle Athletic Conference (MAC) announced their 2022 Field Hockey All-Conference and Annual Award Winners. Among the honorees from the MAC Commonwealth were a half dozen Falcons with Offensive Player of the Year Ashlyn Smith and Rookie of the Year Mallory Kline leading the way for Messiah.

In addition to her Offensive Player of the Year honor, Smith was named to the First Team along with Messiah defender Lauren Seubert. As mentioned, Kline earned Rookie of the Year honors, but picked up Second Team accolades alongside Leah Bryner and Catie Brubaker. Allie Mast rounded out the Falcons' accolades on the season with an Honorable Mention nod.

Ashlyn Smith claimed the program's 18th all-time Player of the Year honor for the Falcons and fifth Offensive Player of the Year award since the Player of the Year split into Offensive and Defensive in 2013. Smith was a First Team All-Conference honoree last season and stepped her game up in 2022. She has scored 15 goals and added nine assists as Messiah's leading offensive threat. A starter in all 18 games this season, Smith has scored in 10 different matches netting multiple goals on five occasions. Her 15 goals lead the team, but Smith also is the team-leader in assists with nine. She dished out a season-high three in a 7-0 victory at Eastern on Oct. 8.

An honorable mention midfielder a season ago, Lauren Seubert stepped onto the First Team for her stellar defense this season. Anchoring Messiah's defensive line, Seubert and the Falcons have allowed just 16 goals on the season for a 0.89 goals against average, the 14th-best mark in the country. In addition to her strong play in the back, Seubert is also Messiah's penalty stroke specialist, netting six goals on the season on strokes. She's added two assists for 14 total points on the year.

Mallory Kline had a successful first year in Grantham. After coming off the bench the first two games of the season, Kline stepped into a starting role and never looked back. She scored in her first three career starts and has netted 11 goals with two assists on the season for 24 points. She is the second-leading scorer on the Falcons and collected her lone multi-goal game with two tallies in a key 3-2 victory against York on Oct. 12. For her strong season, Kline was named the MAC Commonwealth Rookie of the Year and claimed a spot on the Second Team. Kline is the 14th Messiah Falcon to be named a Rookie of the Year in field hockey.

Joining Kline on the Second Team were Leah Bryner and Catie Brubaker. For Bryner, the All-Conference honor is the first of her career while Brubaker picks up her second-straight Second Team nod from the conference. From her midfield position, Bryner has scored four goals and assisted on two more. Against Stevenson on Oct. 19, Bryner tallied a pair of goals, including the game-winner.

Between the pipes, Brubaker has been consistent for the Falcons. In 965 minutes, Brubaker has allowed 16 goals for a goals against average of 0.99. She has made 55 saves on the season, including a season-high 11 against Johns Hopkins on Sept. 3. She has six shutouts on the season.

Junior defender Allie Mast earned her first All-Conference accolade with an Honorable Mention nod this season. Alongside fellow honoree Seubert, Mast and the Falcons have allowed 0.89 goals per game and earned nine shutouts, including only four goals in conference play.

The Falcons earned their 15th-straight MAC Commonwealth Title last weekend with a 2-0 victory over York and will play in the NCAA Tournament this weekend at Rowan University. Messiah currently owns a 16-2 record and are winners of 14-straight matches as they head into the NCAA Tournament.
