Field Hockey Claims 15th-Straight Conference Championship

GRANTHAM, Pa. – For the 15th-straight season, the Messiah field hockey team reigns atop the MAC Commonwealth. On Saturday afternoon, the Falcons earned a 2-0 victory over the York Spartans in the MAC Commonwealth Championship Game to claiming the 15th-straight and 28th all-time conference championship. Messiah scored both of their goals in the second quarter with Carrie Bair and Makayla Malcolm registering goals for the Falcons.

The match started defensively for both teams, but Messiah broke through in the second quarter with a pair of tallies.

In the match, Messiah held the Spartans to just one shot while attempting a dozen of their own. The Falcons earned 10 corners while limiting York to just one.

With the victory, Messiah advances to the NCAA Tournament that will begin on Wednesday with First Round games. The complete NCAA Division III bracket will be released on Sunday night at 10:30 p.m. in a selection show on ncaa.com.

How It Happened
The opening 12 minutes of Saturday afternoon's MAC Commonwealth Championship was played in the midfield. Neither the Falcons nor the Spartans attempted a shot, but York held a slight edge in the possession battle. That changed late in the period with the Falcons attempting the first shot of the contest with an attempt by Carried Bair saved with under three minutes remaining in the quarter. In the final minute of the first quarter, Messiah eared the first corner of the match, resulting in a shot by Ashlyn Smith that went just wide.

Messiah got on the board twice in the second quarter to take a 2-0 lead into the half. Beyond the two tallies, the Falcons threated for more with a penalty stroke saved and a total of six corners taken by the Falcons. Messiah's first score came just over two minutes into the period with Carrie Bair finding the back of the cage on a corner. After an initial shot by Mallory Kline was saved by a York defender, Carrie Bair collected the rebound and lifted it into the back of the goal.

Midway through the half, Messiah had a quality look at an insurance goal, earning a penalty stroke. The Spartans' goalie Belle Fields came up with a big save to keep the deficit at just one.

The Falcons eventually found that insurance goal before the half thanks to a great individual effort from Hailey Wormer. Messiah forced a turnover and Wormer picked up possession in Messiah's defensive end. Wormer carried possession all the way up the right side, drawing two defenders when she got into the circle. She slipped a pass to a wide-open Makayla Malcolm on the opposite side and Malcolm knocked home her seventh goal of the season. The tally gave Messiah a 2-0 lead at the half.

Like the first quarter, the third featured no scoring. Messiah and York each earned a corner, but neither team was able to register a shot.

In the fourth, Messiah had a handful of quality chances, but the Spartans kept them out of the cage. Catie Brubaker was called upon for the first and only time in the match with under three minutes to play when she thwarted a York breakaway to keep a clean sheet.

Messiah earned the 2-0 victory while outshooting the Spartans 12-1 in the match. With the win, Messiah improves to 16-2 overall on the season and extends their winning streak to 14 matches.

For her stellar defensive play, senior Lauren Seubert was named the MAC Commonwealth Tournament Most Valuable Player.
