No. 5 Field Hockey Falls in Defensive Battle Against Middlebury in NCAA Third Round

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Messiah University field hockey team were defeated 3-0 by the top-ranked Panthers in the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers scored a goal in the seventh minute to take an early lead. The two defenses battled with only seven shots through the first three quarters. The Panthers added goals in the final two minutes to put the final score at 3-0. Catie Brubaker was a brick wall in net for the Falcons recording five saves that kept the Falcons in the game.
 
Messiah concludes the 2023 season with an 18-2 overall record.
 
First Quarter
The first five minutes of the game both teams were feeling each other out with some back-and-forth midfield play. The Panthers though found an opening in the Falcons defense in the seventh minute. Hannah Medwar sent a pass from the left side of the circle across to the middle. Katie George was there to tip the ball into the back of the goal to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The Falcons looked to respond to the Panthers goal with a penalty corner opportunity in the eighth minute. Jenna Lutz sent the ball into play to Nicole Shank. Shank ripped a shot from the top of the circle, but the shot was blocked by a Panthers defender.
 
Second Quarter
Both teams played great defense throughout the quarter. The Panthers defense stepped up multiple times with the Panthers having three green cards, but not conceding a shot. The lone shot of the quarter was a shot wide by the Panthers and the score remained 1-0 at the half.
 
Third Quarter
The two teams defense continued to put on a show in the third quarter The Panthers were able to get two great looks in the 36th and 40th minute, but both times Catie Brubaker made incredible saves to keep the score at 1-0 going into the fourth quarter.
 
Fourth Quarter
The Panthers continued to push the pace on the offensive end to start the fourth quarter. In just the first minute of the quarter, Caroline Segal sent a shot that looked like it was headed for the back of the goal, but again Catie Brubaker stood tall to keep the Falcons deficit to one. The Panthers again looked for their second goal on the day in the 52nd minute. Katie George and Caroline Segal got two great looks, but Catie Brubaker made a pair of great saves to keep the score at 1-0. In the final two minutes Audrey Lazar scored two goals for the Panthers to put the final score at 3-0.
 
Stats
The Panthers outshot the Falcons 13-1. The Panthers had eight shots on goal to the Falcons zero. Both teams earned one penalty corner. Catie Brubaker started in goal for the Falcons and made five saves.
 
Closing Out the Season
The Falcons conclude the 2023 season with an 18-2 overall record, with a perfect 7-0 record in MAC Commonwealth play. The Falcons won their 16th straight MAC Commonwealth title on Nov. 4 with a 1-0 win over York.
