Messiah Fall Sports 2023 Preview

GRANTHAM, Pa. – This week the 2023 fall preseason polls for the MAC Commonwealth are being released. The 2023 fall season for Messiah Athletics is set to begin competition next weekend.
 
Read below for season previews and preseason MAC Commonwealth polls.
 
Women's Soccer
 
Last season, the women's soccer team finished with a 20-2-3 record with a 7-1 record in conference play. The team won their 19th conference championship in program history and made it to their 22nd straight NCAA Tournament, where they fell in the Final Four to John Hopkins.
 
The 2023 roster is led by returning All-Americans, Kristina Akselsen and Jenna Skurcenski. The team also returns Hannah Adair, Lydia Ring, Kaitlyn Laird, and Tahlia Lloyd to lead a young midfield and forward group. A strong defensive core of Skurcenski, Julia Martin, Bella Touzeau, and Olivia Shuck will make it difficult for opponents to score throughout the season. Ava Wert returns for the Falcons in goal after starting 22 of 25 games in net. The roster brings in eight new players to the fold after graduating nine players after the 2022 season.
 
The 2023 season begins with the Messiah opening weekend tournament with the Falcons facing University of Puget Sound on Sept. 1 at 7:30 p.m. and Stevens on Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m. The Falcons will play eight home games at Shoemaker Field and will play 10 road games during the 2023 season. Other keys games include a rematch of the 2022 Final Four at preseason No. 1 Johns Hopkins on Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. and a rematch of the MAC Commonwealth Championship on Oct. 28 at York at 3 p.m.

Men's Soccer

Last season, the men's soccer team finished with a 20-0-2 record. The Falcons won their 20th Conference Championship in program history with a 5-0 win over Widener. In the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament Messiah fell to the Ephs of Williams College in PKs to end the season.
 
The 2023 roster is led by United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Year, Matt McDonald. McDonald, Ben Lefever, Cole Christian, Stefan Leitzel, and Patrick Lee lead a strong, veteran offense for the Falcons. Grant Johnson, Ben Vollmer, Jake Lent-Koop, and Chad Vrolijk will lead a talented and experienced defensive core for the Falcons. The competition for the starting goalkeeper will continue into the season with Adam Carter, Isaac Owen, and Drew Stief returning for the Falcons. Along with the veteran core, the Falcons bring in six first year players to the roster.
 
The Falcons begin their 2023 season on the road against TNCJ at 2 p.m. at Catholic University. The Falcons host nine games at Shoemaker Field this season. Some key home games on the Falcons schedule include a rivalry matchup against Elizabethtown on Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m., NCAA Semifinalist Mary Washington on Sept. 23 at 5:00 p.m., and a rematch of the MAC Commonwealth Championship against Widener on Oct. 7 at 3:00 p.m.

Field Hockey

Last season, the field hockey team finished with a 17-3 record with an 8-0 record in MAC Commonwealth play. The Falcons claimed their 15th straight and 28th all-time conference championship in program history with a 2-0 win over York. After defeating Tufts in the NCAA Second Round, the Falcons fell to Rowan in the NCAA Third Round to end the 2022 season.
 
The 2023 Falcons roster is a deep group of returning players and some talented freshman. The offense is led by reigning MAC Rookie of the Year, Mallory Kline. Returning with Kline, Carrie Bair and Hailey Womer look to lead the forward unit for the Falcons. Leah Bryner, Jenna Lutz, Madi Johnson, Teagan Murrie, and Kelsey Heltzel look to lead a deep and talented midfield core for the Falcons. Allie Mast, Liz Ong, Nicole Shank, and Lillian Peters return to lead a strong back end for Messiah. Second Team All-MAC Commonwealth and NFHCA Second-Team All-Region goalkeeper, Catie Brubaker returns after starting all 20 games for the Falcons in 2022. Messiah adds a talented group of six freshman that look to add depth and make an immediate impact on the 2023 season.
 
The Falcons begin the 2023 season on the road at Dickinson College on Sept. 1 at 3:00 p.m. The Falcons open the season at Anderson Field on Saturday, Sept. 9 against Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m. Messiah plays eight total home games at Anderson Field during the 2023 season. Some notable home games during the 2023 season include a rematch of the 2022 NCAA Third Round game against Rowan on Sept. 27 at 6:00 p.m. and a rematch of the MAC Commonwealth Championship game against York on Oct. 28. At 1:00 p.m.

Women's Volleyball

Last season, the women's volleyball team finished with an overall record of 19-10 with an 5-3 record in the MAC commonwealth.  The Falcons made it to the conference tournament semi-finals before losing in three sets to No.1 seeded Eastern University.
 
The 2023 Falcons roster is set to have an experienced roster with 10 returning players to go along with a talented freshman class. First team All-MAC Commonwealth outside hitter, Mackenzie Feight looks to have another dominant season for the Falcons. With Feight, Emma Swartz, Chayney Barnhart, Maddy Eby and Caitlin Lielbriedis return after earning All-MAC Commonwealth honors last season. Also, Julia Bowen and Anna Weldon look to build off impressive seasons in 2022. The Falcons added seven freshman that will add depth and look to compete for playing time in 2023.
 
The Falcons begin the 2023 season on the road for the Susquehanna tournament. Their first opponent will be Nazareth University on Sept. 1 at 5:00 p.m. in Selinsgrove, Pa. The Falcons home opener will be against rival Elizabethtown on Sept. 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Jordan Hitchcock Arena. Some other notable home games will be a matchup with MAC Conference tournament runner up Stevenson University on Sept. 26 at 7:00 p.m. and a rematch of the 2022 MAC Commonwealth Semifinal Game against Eastern University on Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m.
