The 2022 season marks Scott Frey's 21st year as head coach of Messiah College women's soccer. In his 22 seasons at the helm, his teams have collected an astounding 458-29-33 record—a winning percentage 0.910 that makes him the winningest active Division III men’s or women’s soccer coach with 10 more years of experience.
Frey's teams have earned six NCAA Division III National Championships, including back-to-back titles in both 2008 and 2009, and 2011 and 2012. The latest title came in 2019. Altogether across his 22 years at Messiah, Frey's teams have advanced to 22 NCAA Championships and 14 Final Fours. They have finished as the national runner-up four times, including their 2016 season.
In 2022 Messiah finished the season with a record of 20-2-3 and advanced to their 14th Final Four appearance before falling in the national semi-final. Along the way the Falcons captured their 19th conference title.
The Falcons' first National Championship came in 2005 as they also marked their first-ever undefeated season (22-0-1).
In addition to building the Falcons into a national powerhouse, Frey has also developed the Falcons into a juggernaut in the MAC Commonwealth. Since arriving to the Falcons' bench in 2000, the Falcons have won 19 conference titles in 22 seasons.
Frey has been recognized as the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year for Division III in 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2015. He was also named the NSCAA Division III National Coach of the Year in 2005, 2009, 2011, 2019.
A 1984 graduate of Messiah College, Frey began his college coaching career as an assistant with the Messiah men's team from 1988-1992. In 1993, Frey took over the men's team at Alma College in Michigan. There, he led the program to two MIAA Conference titles, three NCAA Championships appearances, and a berth into the NCAA Division III Final Four in 1999. He was recognized as the Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year in 1999.
