The Role of Parent Coaches

Parent coaches are an essential part of EGSA's Recreational Program and should be committed to their team for the duration of the season. As a coach, you are a role model for your team's players and will help shape their love of the sport of soccer. Coaching is a very rewarding volunteer experience and it does not take much of your time. Listed below are the specifics for each age group.

U8 & older divisions: Parent Coaches are expected to attend the Challenger Clinic with their teams and encouraged to hold a weekly team practice that focuses on technical skills, game play (throw-ins, goal kicks, etc), and teamwork. There are resources on our website (look under the Coaches menu) to help you quickly plan a practice and our coaching directors are happy to give you advice if you ask. (Time commitment: 2-3 hours/week, weekday and weekend)

U6 division: Parent Coaches are expected to attend the Challenger Clinic with their teams, which is held 30 minutes before the U6 games on the weekend. You are not required to hold any additional practices for your team, but can if you would like. (Time Commitment: 1-1.5 hours/week, weekend only)

Little Kicker division: Parent Coach Coordinators are expected to attend the Challenger Clinic with their groups each weekend. (Time commitment: < 1 hour/week, weekend only)

Per Soccer Rhode Island and US Youth Soccer, all EGSA Coaches need to successfully complete a background check.
If you volunteer to coach during the registration process, please complete coach registration and all forms for security.

The Purpose and Role of Challenger Trainers and Clinics

Our professional trainers from Challenger Sports are mostly responsible for developing players' individual soccer skills. These sessions are run clinic-style and employ games and exercises that focus on foot skills, ball familiarity, and technique, all while having fun! Parent Coaches are expected to attend these clinics or find an assistant or another parent who can attend.
Parent coach involvement helps in three ways:
1) extra supervision to maintain order throughout the clinic and assist with injuries/shoe tying/etc.
2) extra coaches = more personal attention and guidance for the players with their soccer skills.
3) Parent Coaches just might pick up a coaching trick or two from the Challenger trainers!

The following Challenger clinics are offered in the spring: (Tentative for Spring 2021 due to federal visa restrictions.)

U8 Girls - Thursday, 4:30 - 5:15 p.m. (Frenchtown Lower Field)
U8 Boys - Thursday, 5:30 - 6:15 p.m. (Frenchtown Lower Field)
U10 Coed - Thursday, 6:30 - 7:15 p.m. (Frenchtown Lower Field)
U6 Coed - Sundays. Group 1 from 1-1:30 p.m. and Group 2 from 1:45 - 2:15 (Meadowbrook - TBD)
Note: for U6 teams, Challenger clinic is immediately followed by a game.
Little Kickers - Sunday, 11:00 & 12:00 (Meadowbrook - TBD)

Spring 2021 Soccer Divisions

EGSA forms our House League teams by school-grade in order to create a fun, developmental program for our young soccer stars. When players advance into older recreational divisions and travel soccer, team formation is done by birth year, per US Youth Soccer rules. For now, let the kids play with their friends! Please contact us with division questions.

U9/U10 Coed Division (3rd - 5th grade)

Birthdate range: September 1, 2010 to August 31, 2012

- Teams are coed
- Teams are assigned a volunteer parent coach. It is up to the parent coach to find an assistant coach, if desired.
- Teams will be formed with approx. 10 players based on number of registrants. Games are played in a 7v7 format (including goalie).
- Teams have a weekly team practice run by the parent coach(es) with a focus on game play. The Challenger Foot Skills Clinic is run weekly by professional trainers from Challenger Sports with a focus on skill development.
(Tentative) Coed Challenger Clinics are Thursdays from 6:30-7:15 p.m. at Frenchtown Lower Fields.
- (Tentative) Games are Sundays at 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. at Frenchtown Upper Field

U8 Division (older kindergarten and 1st & 2nd graders under age 8)

Birthdate range: September 1, 2012 to August 31, 2014

- Teams are gender-specific or co-ed based on number of registrations. This tends to be a larger group so often is gender-specific.
- Teams are assigned a volunteer parent coach. It is up to the parent coach to find an assistant coach, if desired.
- Teams are formed with 7-9 players per team to ensure lots of playing time. Games are played in a 5v5 format (including goalie).
- Teams have a weekly team practice run by the parent coach(es) with a focus on game play. The Challenger Foot Skills Clinic is run weekly by professional trainers from Challenger Sports with a focus on skill development.

- (Tentative) Girls Challenger Clinics will be Thursdays from 4:30-5:15 p.m. at Frenchtown Lower Fields.
- (Tentative) Boys Challenger clinics will be Thursdays from 5:30-6:15 p.m. at Frenchtown Lower Fields.
- (Tentative) Girls games will be Sundays at 1 p.m. at Frenchtown Lower Fields.
- (Tentative) Boys games will be Sundays at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Frenchtown Lower Fields.

U6 Division (older pre-k and kindergarten under 6 years)

Birthdate range: September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2015

- Teams are coed
- Teams will be assigned a parent coach.  It is up to the parent coach to find an assistant coach, if desired.
- Teams will be formed with 6-7 players per team to ensure lots of playing time. U6 games are played in a 3v3 format (no goalies and no players
standing in front of the goal like a goalie would.)
- Challenger Foot Skills Clinics are Sundays at 1 p.m. or 1:45 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Fields (tentative). Parent coaches assist the Challenger
   trainers.

- Each team plays a 20-minute game immediately following the foot skills clinic. The time of arrival is for the clinic. Schedules will show the field
number that players go to after the clinic for the game. *Time on schedule is the clinic time, not the game time! Game follows clinic.
- No weekday clinics for the U6 Division, coaches may choose to hold a team practice.

Little Kickers (3 years and pre-k)
Birthdate range:  September 1, 2015 to December 31, 2017
- Little Kickers will be divided into small, coed groups with a parent coach.
- Foot Skills Clinics are led by professional trainers from Challenger Sports, with parent coaches assisting.
- There are no official games, but clinics may contain scrimmages in the second half of the season based on the general group ability.
- Group sizes will depend upon the number of players in each clinic but will be organized in a way to ensure that the experience is not overwhelming
   for the players and coaches.
- It is developmentally appropriate for players to lack interest in organized play. We want their soccer experience to be comfortable and fun. If comfortable means they hang onto a parent and watch, do not worry. The will participate in their own time. We, traditionally, allow a parent/guardian onto the field to help but were not able to during the Fall 2020 season due to Covid. We found there was an unusually low number of tentative players as a result. Food for thought...
- Clinics will be held on Sundays at 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Fields (tentative)
