The East Greenwich Soccer Association provides a travel team soccer league for children ages 8 (9U) to 15 (16U). Placement on a travel team is awarded through performance at evaluations that are juried by third-party, professional coaches.  All players are encouraged to participate in the evaluation process, however, placement on a travel team is not guaranteed.

The philosophy of EGSA's travel program prioritizes player development over winning. A number of research studies have shown that an alarming number of youth athletes abandon a sport beyond age 10 due to "burn-out" with the sport. Our goal is for youth athletes to continue enjoying soccer and honing their skills well into their high school and college years. We also believe that with solid, professional training winning will naturally follow.

Playing for an EGSA travel team gives players a premier club experience without the premier club cost. EGSA has partnered with Challenger Sports to provide dedicated professional training for all of our travel teams. Our crew of  is anchored by David Rush. Coach Rushy is one of the most licensed and recognized youth coaches in the New England region. He is routinely sought out by other clubs, but EGSA is proud to have him working with our players!

Participation on an EGSA travel team is a commitment.  EGSA's travel teams participate in the RI Super Liga and travel to other towns for approximately half of their games. These teams generally participate in at least one tournament per year, as well.  In addition to games, teams train 1-2 times per week for a total of 1.5-3 hours. Training sessions are run by our professional trainers.

The cost to play with an EGSA travel team varies slightly from team to team. The cost to train and play on a team that trains twice weekly is $250 per season ($500 total for fall & spring). The per player cost for teams that train once weekly is $125 per season ($250 total for fall & spring). Tournaments may add another $30-50 to this total.

During the winter session (Nov-Mar), EGSA offers an indoor Technical Training Program led by professional trainers from Challenger Sports.  Three sessions are offered each week (Tues/Weds/Thurs) from 6-7pm. Players can attend all or none of the sessions each week, to fit their busy schedules. Cost to participate in the winter program is $150/player for the entire winter, which we believe is an excellent value! EGSA also strongly encourages its players to participate in other sports to reduce the risk of repetitive, overuse injuries that can occur from focusing on a single sport.

Per US Youth Soccer Rules (and EGSA policy, accordingly), travel teams are formed by birth year, not school grade.

EGSA forms teams starting in the 9U division and typically through 16U, depending upon player interest.
The three types of teams are :
"Anchor Team" : primary team formed for a single gender/age group
"Rhody Team" : secondary team(s) formed for a single gender/age group.
"United Team" : secondary team(s) formed by combining players from two birth years.

The RI Super Liga and Soccer RI travel team year is divided into three seasons:

  • Fall outdoor session (Sept - Nov)  Training and games
  • Winter session I (Nov - Jan)  Technical Training-only
  • Winter session II (Feb - Apr)  Technical Training only
  • Spring outdoor session (Apr - Jun)  Training and games (Optional for Rhody & United team players)
