2018 Coaches

With the OPBA Spring 2018 registration process well underway, the league is already beginning the process of selecting coaches.  OPBA has grown due in large part to a community of dedicated, quality coaches.  If you have volunteered to be a Head Coach or Assistant Coach during registration, then we thank you for stepping up to help guide the roughly 1,350 players that will participate during the 2018 season.  If you are still interested in being a coach, then you still have time to volunteer by sending a request to opbacoaching2018@gmail.com.

In some divisions (particularly 4U and 5U), there will be a shortage of coaches, so we encourage all those interested to get involved, regardless of baseball experience.  In other divisions, there will be more coaching volunteers than teams available, in which case the OPBA Board of Directors will work through a coach selection process.  Please note that volunteering to coach does not guarantee placement; however, every attempt will be made to find a role for as many people as possible.

Selection Process

T
he coach selection process will work, since it will operate slightly differently than in previous years:

  • As opposed to previous years, the process will begin with assigning the Head Coaches prior to assigning entire coaching staffs.
  • All Head Coach requests will be taken into consideration and evaluated by a Committee of OPBA Board Members based on past coaching experience, end of season evaluations, previous involvement in the league, etc.
  • The final list of Head Coaches will be subject to approval by the entirety of the OPBA Board of Directors.
  • After the Head Coaches have been established, each Head Coach will be asked to submit a list of requests for two (2) Assistant Coaches and one (1) Requested Player.  The final coaching staffs will be reviewed to ensure that all divisions can achieve competitive balance.
  • Once all official coaching staffs have been established, the remainder of the volunteers will be distributed evenly across teams during the team creation process, so that each team has ample support and the majority of volunteers have a role.

Coaches Clinic and Lesson Plans

For those interested in coaching (head and assistant), please reserve March 4 from 3-5 pm on your calendar. On that date, we will have a Coaches Clinic during which we will discuss OPBA coaching requirements, provide practice plans for each level and demonstrate in an interactive manner some of the training techniques in the practice plan.  The demonstration portion and handout of practice plans will be done in small groups separated by division.  This session will be mandatory!  The clinic will be held at the Bradley Sports Center.
