WAYSA Uniform, Apparel and Safety Guidelines
The following safety guidelines are NOT all inclusive. They are intended to provide parents and players guidance as to what is and what is not permitted to be worn while playing soccer. These guidelines apply to all levels of Youth Soccer. The referee has the final decision as to what will and will not be permitted on game day. These guidelines are in place for the both the safety of the player wearing an item as well as those playing with or against them.
Coaches are expected to enforce these safety guidelines for all practices (with the exception of the team uniform).
General Uniform
Shin guards are required to be worn at all times. They must be worn under a sock and fully covered by the sock at all times.
Players may wear soccer cleats, sneakers or turf shoes. Under no circumstances is a player permitted to wear football, softball or baseball spikes. Metal spikes or spikes with a single cleat at the front of the shoe are not permitted.
All players should wear the team uniform for the game. For Travel teams, the uniform must have a clearly visible and unique number.
Hats, Bandanas, Bows, Barrettes, Head Bands
Players can’t wear baseball hats.
Knit caps are allowed, assuming they do not have any hard materials or a pom-pom.
Head bands and bandanas are permitted assuming they to not have a ‘tail’ that another player can grab.
Barrettes are not recommended but are permitted as long as they are not made of plastic, metal or another hard material. Bobbi pins are not permitted.
Bows are permitted assuming they are not affixed using a plastic, metal or other hard material. Ideally, the bow will be affixed with a rubber band or other elastic hair tie.
Jewelry
Players are not permitted to wear jewelry of any kind. This includes, but is not limited to:
Earrings, necklaces, bracelets, watches, rings, visible piercings and anklets. If a player can’t remove the jewelry, they are not eligible to play.
The jewelry can be made of any material to be considered unsafe, including various fabrics.
Earrings are not permitted to be taped to grant access to play the game.
Exception: A player may wear a Medical ID bracelet. The bracelet must be taped to the player's wrist without covering the required medical information.
Glasses
Sunglasses are not permitted to be worn.
Prescription or sports glasses are permitted.
Casts
A player is permitted to play with a cast on their arm. The cast must be wrapped and properly padded to ensure the cast can’t injure another player. The referee has the discretion to allow or deny the covering based on their assessment.
Cold Weather Gear
All cold weather gear must be worn under the team uniform.
Hoodies are not permitted. A long sleeve T-Shirt or hoodless sweatshirt can be worn underneath the game shirt.
No raincoats, jackets, quarter zips or item with zippers, buttons, snaps or any hard material can be worn.
Sweatpants can’t have any zippers, buttons or snaps on them.
Knit caps are allowed assuming they do not have any hard materials (for example a brim) or a pom-pom.
Gloves are permitted assuming they do not have any metal, plastic or hard material attached to them.
Neck Gaiters are not permitted.
Ear muffs are not permitted.
Note: All of the above listed items can be worn while the player is off the field, but must be removed prior to being allowed to play.
If you have any questions about what is and is not permitted, please reach out to your coach or Commissioner. If necessary, they can contact the WAYSA Board for further guidance.
