Tell me about Mason Youth Basketball!
Mason Youth Basketball (MYB) is dedicated to providing boys and girls with the opportunity to enjoy the game of basketball. Our youth basketball program offers various levels, including an Instructional program for grades 1-2, a Recreational program for grades 3-12, and an Athletic program for boys and girls in grades 4-6. Formed in 2004 by the Mason Community Center in partnership with MYB, the program aims to develop skills, sportsmanship, and teamwork in a fun environment.
What is instructional basketball?
Instructional basketball is designed for first and second-grade boys and girls, focusing on skill development, sportsmanship, and fair play. Games are played on 8 or 9-foot rims without keeping scores or standings. The clock only stops for timeouts and when referees explain skills and rules. Each player receives a participation award.
Who is MYB?
Mason Youth Basketball is a non-profit organization that started in 1995 to provide girls with competitive basketball opportunities. In 2004, MYB expanded to include boys’ teams through a partnership with the Mason Community Center. The program has grown to over 130 teams, and we anticipate a similar number of participants for the upcoming season.

How and when do I register?
On-time registration begins in mid-July and continues through September. Register online at Imagine Mason or at the Mason Community Center by calling 229-8555.
What if I missed registration but still want to play?
Please register anyway. If space permits, we will place your child on a team.
How are teams selected?
- Instructional Grades 1-2: Teams are formed via blind draw with a balance of first and second graders. A head coach may select one assistant coach.
- Recreational Grades 3-6: Core teams (at least 5 returning players) can stay together and new teams can be formed with friends. Teams are placed in high or low recreational divisions based on previous records.
- Grades 7 and higher: Encouraged to form teams with friends. MYB will try to place unassigned players on teams if possible.
- Athletic Grades 4-6: Teams are formed by tryouts conducted by Mason High School coaches, and coaches are selected by the MYB Board.
Can I request a specific coach?
- Grades 1-2: Coach requests are not permitted due to blind draw team formation.
- Grades 3-6: You may request your prior year coach, but MYB cannot guarantee it.
- Grades 7 and higher: Form teams with friends; individual coach requests are not accommodated.
How many players are on a team?
Recreational teams generally have 8-10 players, ensuring each player can play at least half of the game. Athletic teams also aim for 8 players, with each player required to play at least 12 minutes.
If a participant doesn’t make the athletic team, are they automatically placed on a recreational team?
Yes, unless a parent opts out.
What are the chances of getting on a team if there is a waitlist?
Chances are very good! We strive to accommodate all interested participants.
What if my child makes the school team?
Enroll in MYB by the deadline of September 30 to secure a spot. If your child makes the school team, you will receive a refund through a household credit.
How do I become a coach?
We welcome enthusiastic volunteers to coach and manage teams. Experience is appreciated but not required, as training and resources are provided. Details are available on the Coaches Info section of the main page.
