Diamond Skills Rookie Program - Unique & Special

WHAT: A program designed by seasoned baseball coaches to build a basic foundation
of skills and knowledge transferable to different age levels.


WHO: Boys and Girls Under 6

WHY: We want our kids to love baseball and have fun playing America’s pastime!

HOW: This is not tee-ball as we know it! But rather a compilation of high-energy and
challenging activities (aka “Diamond Skills”) that provide a foundation for throwing,
fielding, and hitting. Sessions are structured to create skill progression, immediate
feedback, and a quick pace.

                                                                                                            Goals:

Goals of the 4 Year Old Division

● Players want to be there!
● Players are able to grip baseball bat properly and know which side of the plate to stand on
● Players understand the concept of swinging and if possible HARD
● Players can successfully run the bases
● Players are able to identify 1st, 2nd and 3rd base, as well as home plate.
● Players can properly setup and throw (e.g. “Airplane, Muscle Man, Laser Eyes, Step & Throw”)
● Players can catch a ball without a glove (tossed by a coach)

Goals of the 5 Year Old Division
Added onto the above

● Players want to be there!
● Players can properly setup at home plate in a repeatable manner
● Players have gained experience hitting a pitched ball from a coach (front toss)
● Players get excited when they hit the ball (this must be modeled from coaches and parents)
● Players understand the concept of hitting the bottom half of the baseball
● Players can swing, hit a ball, and immediately run to first base
● Players understand single, double, triple, and homeruns.
● Players understand the concept of getting the ball to 1st base before the runner gets there
● Players start understanding that you field a ground ball between your legs
● Players can catch a ball with one hand without a glove (tossed by a coach)


Goals of the 6 Year Old Division:
Added onto the above

● Players want to be there!
● Players can hit a pitched ball from a (front toss) and then machines in preparation for farm AA
(not saying consistently, just that it has happened)
● Players understand the concept the further they hit the ball the farther they can run around the
bases
● Players have zero hesitation running to specific bases – especially when a teammate is up the bat and
they are on the bases
● Players understand the concepts of throwing a baseball during a game setting
● Players start understanding the concepts of how to use their glove to catch a baseball
● Players understand force out at 1st base.
● Players understand force out when runners on 1st, 1st and 2nd, and bases loaded. MAYBE
● Players understand the tag play to record an out with runner on 2nd, runner on 3rd, runner on 2nd and 3rd




                                                                                                  Schedule: 

Number of Weeks & Games
- 8 weeks, Off Memorial day weekend 5/25
- Saturday games start 4/6, end 6/1 on NELL day

Saturday Time Slots
- 4-year-olds: 9:00am – 10:00am (1 hour)
- 5 year-olds: 10:15am – 11:30am (1 hour 15 minutes)
- 6 year-olds: 11:30 -12:45 (1 hour 15 minutes)

Practices:
- 6 year-olds: 1 weeknight a week, likely 5:30 & 6:30
