Code of Conduct

FRYB PLAYER CODE OF CONDUCT Youth Basketball plays a vital role in encouraging physical, social, and emotional growth of children. It is therefore essential for parents, coaches and officials to encourage their youth basketball players to embrace the values of good sportsmanship, discipline, and character development. All compliance infractions will be reviewed by the FRYB Board for appropriate actions. WHAT TO DO - Have fun - Be a good sport (win or lose); be honest, be fair, and always show good sportsmanship to all coaches, players, officials, and fans - Learn the value of commitment to the team - Put personal goals aside for the betterment of the team - Show courtesy and respect to teammates, opponents, officials, and coaches - Realize that athletic contests, including practice sessions, are educational experiences and opportunities - Treat everyone, including coaches, parents, players, opponents, and officials with respect regardless of race, creed, color, nationality, or sex WHAT NOT TO DO - Players will not engage in unsportsmanlike conduct, both verbal and physical - Players will not engage in rude behavior SPECIAL NOTE Technical Fouls: Coaches are required to report all technical fouls to their rec/travel director. - If a player receives a technical foul, the coach is expected to inform the rec/travel director of the infraction - Any player who receives a second technical foul at any time during the remainder of the season will be immediately suspended for the next game - If a player receives a third technical foul, at any time during the season, the board will review the matter and determine if that player will be removed from the team and FRYB program FRYB PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT Parents are vital to the development of young athletes. Whether sitting in the stands or helping out as a volunteer, parents must set a positive example. Parents and adults involved in youth sports should be models of good sportsmanship and lead by example on and off the court. All compliance infractions will be reviewed by the FRYB Board for appropriate actions. - Give constructive criticism during a private moment, never in front of other parents, players, officials, spectators, etc. - Support your coach, and never coach from the stands. It is okay to encourage your child but not to coach your child or another child - Refrain from using profanity - Abide by doctor’s decision in all matters of player’s health, injuries, and physical ability to play - Accept the decisions of officials on the court as being fair and called to the best ability of the officials. Parents must stay off the court and remain under control in order to set a good example for players and other spectators - Do not criticize an opposing team, its players, fans, coaches or team, by words or gestures - Support the coaches, players, and officials and help teach the value of team commitment, sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and fair play - Avoid using alcohol, illegal substances, or tobacco products at game/practice sites SPECIAL NOTE - Inappropriate behavior is cause for immediate ejection from the stands. Repeat offenses will result in being barred from future games and league sponsored activities - Parents will not encourage their child, or any other person, to engage in unsportsmanlike conduct with any coach, parent, player, participants, officials, or any other attendee - 24 hour rule--If you disagree with the coach during a game/tournament please allow 24 hours to let emotions settle before you address an issue with the coach If there is a compliance infraction of the above Code of Conducts, the procedure for remediation will be as follows: 1. The player and/or parent will be contacted by a Board Member. 2. The Board Member will schedule a time to meet with the coach, player, and parent to discuss the infraction. The meeting will take place as soon as possible after the infraction is incurred. 3. The Board Member will evaluate and offer an opinion to the FRYB Board for a Vote--this could result in penalties, expulsion, or suspension from the program depending upon the infraction. 4. Upon a vote from the Board, the coach, player, and parent will be notified of the Board’s position and the appropriate action will be followed. FRYB COACHES CODE OF CONDUCT Coaches are vital to the development of young athletes. Whether at practice, clinics, or games, coaches must set a positive example. Coaches involved in youth sports should be models of good sportsmanship and lead by example on and off the court. All compliance infractions will be reviewed by the FRYB Board for appropriate actions. - Refrain from criticism of opposing teams, their players, coaches, and fans by word of mouth or gesture - Refrain from demonstrably criticizing their own players in front of spectators, and reserve constructive criticism for later, in private, or in the presence of team members if others might benefit - Accept decisions of game officials without argument as fair and called to the best of the abilities of the officials. - Be responsible for the conduct, control, and removal of any unruly fan(s)/player(s) - Avoid using abusive or profane language at all times - Strive to make every game serve as a training ground for life and a basis for good mental and physical health - Emphasize that winning is the result of good teamwork - Avoid running up the score to the extent of his/her ability; instead, use lopsided games as opportunities to play and develop less skilled players For Rec leagues games only: - Once a team leads by 25 points, it is the Board’s expectation that the coach whose team is ahead will take appropriate actions to keep the game enjoyable for all participants and not run up the score. Such actions could include refraining from fast breaks, refraining from playing pressure defense, and only shooting after a minimum number of passes are executed on the particular possession -If any team wins by 40 or more points, the winning coach will be required to meet with the Board prior to coaching another game that season - Prohibit the participation of any player who is ineligible for any reason - Coaches/parents need to be cleared by the board to coach in a game/practice or remain on the bench during games - Remove any player from games when in doubt about his/her health, whether or not as a result of injury, until competent medical advice is available - Avoid deliberately inciting unsportsmanlike conduct - Avoid using alcohol, illegal substances, or tobacco products at game/practice sites - Abide by all league rules SPECIAL NOTE Technical Fouls: Coaches are required to report all technical fouls to their rec/travel director. - If a coach receives a technical foul or bench technical due to a parent, he/she should inform the travel director of the infraction - If a coach receives a second technical foul at any time during the season, the FRYB Board will review the coach’s actions and reserves the right to suspend the coach for a game - If a coach receives a 3rd technical foul during the season, the FRYB Board will review the coach’s actions and reserve the right to suspend the coach. I have read and understand the codes of conduct. I am attesting that this covers any player, parent, coach, family member, and/or friend that attend any FRYB event.
