Who We Are: We’re Portland Youth Soccer Association (PYSA), and we are the league that your team will play their games through this fall. We work with the club that your kids play for to schedule games, manage fields and assign, train and support referees. If you have questions about practices, team assignments or uniforms, we ask that you kindly reach out to your club directly, as we do not handle these details.

Our mission at PYSA is to provide the youth of Portland area communities with the opportunity to experience the joy and thrill of soccer in a player centered environment. The main focus is on FUN and DEVELOPMENT with age appropriate training & coaching where all players are given the opportunity to compete. We strive for players to develop good sportsmanship skills, individual and team skills, self-esteem, leadership and life skills. In short, PYSA strives to provide an enjoyable, developmental, and appropriate soccer environment for all players, coaches, and parents.

Rules & Important Reminders

U7/U8 Age Group Rules & Reminders
U9/14 Age Group Rules & Reminders

Blowout Policy: It is not the referee's responsibility to enforce this policy; it is up to the coaches on the sidelines. This is recreational soccer and for the players’ enjoyment.

We will be keeping the “old” 8-second goalkeeper rule

Rosters

No physical copies of your roster are required on game day. All participating players on your team must be registered with your club. If you're in need of extra players for a given weekend, please contact another coach in your club (you can also click on any team's name on the PYSA Schedule to find their coach's email). You can borrow:

  • A player from the same age-group at your club

  • A player from a younger age-group at your club

  • A player from a different gender at your club. Girls are also allowed to play on boys teams and vice-versa.

  • Any guest players (those from outside your club) must be registered with a current PYSA club/team for the fall season. Guest coaches must have proof of their registration/clearance with the league.

Fall 2025 Game Schedule - View Here

To find your player's schedule, please select their gender/age group and click the "schedule/standings" button next to their team name. We recommend checking this link weekly, as game schedules are subject to change. For field locations and directions, simply click on the field name within your schedule to access the address and Google Maps links.

Field Set Up: Coaches are responsible for putting the nets up on the goals and setting up 2 corner flags on game-days. Please arrive with enough time to set-up. Contact your club’s Equipment Manager to coordinate receiving your team’s gear.

U9 Jamboree - Sep. 6th Schedule

All of our third grade boys and girls teams will play in a Jamboree this Saturday (9/6), which is part of their fall schedule. The Jamboree is used to help teams moving from U8 to U9 get used to playing with a referee, substitutions, a bigger field and having a goalkeeper. It is also part of our referee training program. All teams will play two games usually with a 25-minute break between. Schedule and game locations can be found on the spreadsheet. The remainder of your fall schedule can be found here. No set up by coaches required.

Jewelry Policy

Due to FIFA restrictions and our commitment to player safety, earrings are strictly prohibited during games. Our referees will not permit any players to participate in games while wearing jewelry of any kind. The only exception is for medical bracelets. You can find more information on player equipment safety here

Referees

Our Referee Assignor is working hard to provide officials for our PYSA matches. In the event that your game is missing a referee, please have one of the coaches or assistants officiate the first half and the other coach or assistant coach from the other team do the 2nd half.

  • Contact PYSA Referee Assignor: [email protected]

  • Interested in being a referee for PYSA? Learn more on our website and see upcoming opportunities & training sessions.

Respect the Call

US Youth Soccer and PYSA are committed to creating a safe, respectful environment for all. To protect referees, updates to the Referee Abuse Policies have been made with clear consequences for inappropriate behavior. All coaches and players must be aware of the changes to avoid suspension or being banned from the game. We also encourage parents to learn the rules to best support players and coaches covered by the policy.

Good Coaches Strive to…

  • Understand the player's age and ability levels and plan practice activities accordingly.
  • Provide for meaningful participation by eliminating lines and including every player in every activity.
  • Develop technique in tactical contexts by playing small-sided games and the using relevant conditions to shape learning.
  • Follow the 75/25 Rule by keeping drill-like activities to a maximum of 25% of the practice time.
  • Balance success and challenge in the activities, by arranging for even-ability teams and making sure the field sizes and any conditions make sense to the skill level of the players.
  • Provide for natural tactical transitions from attack to defense and defense to attack.
  • Provide for natural and connected transitions between activities.
  • Use competition as a motivational tool. What do the players have to do to win and how long is the game?
  • Understand the value of limited feedback during natural stoppages.
  • Understand the value of extended periods of uninterrupted play.
  • Understand the value of excitement and positive reinforcement.
  • Balance the volume of coaching information against the natural facilitation of discovery learning.
  • Effectively match field space to the ability of the players.
  • Vary the range of activities, while maintaining a focus on the key developmental aspects for the age.
  • Study the players' body language for understanding and enjoyment.
  • Study the players' body language to determine when to move an activity along.
  • Show your enthusiasm when something good happens; temper your frustrations when the inevitable mistakes are made.
  • Appreciate the slow pace of learning.
  • Appreciate that mistakes are necessary and important for learning.
