ALL volunteers must complete, return the DALLAS YOUTH BASKETBALL VOLUNTEER APPLICATION AND BACKGROUND CHECK FORM which includes a review for sex offender registries, child abuse and criminal history records. This includes RETURNING volunteers, even if completed last season.

DYB appreciates all past and current volunteers. However, regardless of previous appointments as a volunteer, DYB IS NOT obligated to appoint any person to a volunteer position. Registering to be a volunteer head or assistant coach does not guarantee selection for this position. Selection depends on the number of teams; number of returning coaches from the previous season; completion and passing the DYB background check, and board approval.

All people selected / approved to be a HEAD COACH will be notified by the board member of that division at middle to end of September.

Head coaches must attend both SKILLS ASSESMENT sessions in Mid-October and the PLAYER DRAFT at end of OCTOBER (or appoint a designee in their absence for both). See dates for these in the follow-up email sent after registration. Your division's commissioner will also inform you of these dates. EXCEPTION: 1st and 2nd Grade Divisions DOE NOT hold SKILLS ASSESSMENTS or a DRAFT and players are assigned to teams.

A list of volunteers for assistant coaches will be available. Head coaches review the list and select one as the ASSISTANT COACH after the draft is completed, generally a parent or legal guardian from their team. If there are not enough volunteers for assistant coaches, then the head coaches can ask / select a parent from their team.  

DYB DOES NOT ALLOW a HEAD COACH to select an ASSISTANT COACH who will have a child playing in the same grade / gender division prior to registration / DYB draft. We do this in order to keep the teams as competitively balanced as possible. If a HEAD COACH wishes to coach with a specific person as their ASSISTANT COACH with a child in the same grade / gender division then the HEAD COACH can attempt to draft that person’s child (if still available at the time of your draft pick / slot) for your team and then can choose that person to be their ASSISTANT COACH.

EXCEPTION: There are instances where a HEAD COACH can select their ASSISTANT COACH if the ASSISTANT COACH DOES DOES NOT have a child playing in the same grade / gender division or does not have a child playing at all in DYB.  Examples include but are not limited to spouse, partner, relative, friend, etc.

DYB DOES NOT accommodate requests for players to be assigned with specific coaches nor for players to be placed on the same team as other players. We do this in order to keep the teams as competitively balanced as possible. 3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade players are drafted.1st/2nd grade players are assigned to teams. EXCEPTION FOR HEAD COACHES only: If your child is playing in the same grade / gender division that you are a HEAD COACH, then your child will be assigned to the team you are coaching.  EXCEPTIONS FOR SIBLINGS PLAYING IN THE SAME DIVISION: Siblings of the same gender who are in the same grade division ARE assigned to the same team unless parents request otherwise.
