DALLAS YOUTH BASKETBALL PARENT / GUARDIAN / SPECTATOR / COACH / PLAYER CODE OF CONDUCT
The mission of Dallas Youth Basketball, DYB, is to provide boys and girls in 1st through 8th grades, who live in the Dallas School District, a SAFE, FUN, and POSITIVE environment supported by GOOD SPORSTMANSHIP to learn and play basketball. Anybody that does not adhere to this code of conduct will be ejected from the facility, suspended or banned (possible lifetime) for future DYB activities depending on the severity of the infraction. There will not be refunds for any person(s) ejected, suspended, or banned from the league activities. I, me, we, and us below refer to: me, my family, my guest(s), player(s) / non-player(s), family, spectator(s) DYB coaches. I, me, we, and us understand that:
1. We WILL adhere to all DYB / Dallas School District / Fellowship Church facility rules.
2. Any verbal threat, instance of harm, violence, physical contact, derogatory or gender / cultural / racially / ethnic insensitive comments directed at any individual(s) will result in a lifetime ban for that individual (s) and reported to law enforcement. Your family / children may also be permanently banned from DYB activities.
3. ALL persons volunteering to be head coaches, assistant coaches and team parents must complete, return the DYB VOLUNTEER application which includes a review for sex offender registries, child abuse and criminal history records. This includes RETURNING volunteers. It must be done each season. Regardless of previous appointments as a volunteer, DYB IS NOT obligated to appoint any person to a volunteer position.
4. 3RD to 6th Grade DYB Practices: Only DYB APPROVED players / coaches are allowed in the school / gyms during practices.
Ø Parents, guardians, etc. ARE NOT ALLOWED in the school / gym during practices. This is a school district policy due to the amount of school threats that have occurred in the past and done to ensure the security / safety of the school.
Ø Parents / guardians will drop their children off / pick-up at the door. Parents / guardians must wait until their children are let into the school.
5. 3rd to 6th Grade DYB Practices: We understand we can be considered for a volunteer position as a TEAM HELPER (must complete a DYB Volunteer Background Check Form and be approved) to supervise the school door to assist with letting our team’s players, the next group of players / coaches into the building. TEAM HELPERS MAY ATTEND 3rd to 6th Grade Practices. Limit is 2 per team.
6. 1st/2nd Grade DYB Practices: Parents ARE ALLOWED in practices at the FELLOWSHIP CHURCH.
Ø We WILL enter the gym and use bathrooms only.
Ø No child under 18 may be unsupervised at any time and must remain in the gym with a parent.
Ø DYB / Fellowship Church reserves the right to limit the total of spectators or discontinue allowing spectators in the gym.
7. DYB Games: Families, guests and spectators ARE ALLOWED in the school and FELLOWSHIP CHURCH to watch games.
8. We WILL NOT enter any school gym(s) while the Dallas School District Sports Teams are practicing.
Ø Dallas School District Sports Teams may be practicing prior to the beginning of DYB practices or games that are scheduled to begin at 6PM on weeknights. Their activities CANNOT BE interrupted!
Ø Daycare programs, PTO or extracurricular activities may also be using the gym as above.
Ø We WILL WAIT IN THE LOBBY and WILL NOT enter gym UNTIL THE SCHOOL DISTRICT COACHES, CUSTODIAN, EVENT COORDINATORS or DYB REPRESENTATIVES CLEAR US TO ENTER.
Ø This applies WHEN A SCHOOL TEAM / ACTIVITY IS EXTENDING PAST the scheduled start time of DYB game or practice. The school district does everything possible to ensure that DYB can start on time. Remember, there may be extenuating reasons why a school district practice or activity extends past the start time of DYB events.
Ø Exception: DYB game officials / board members MAY BE ALLOWED in the gym at the discretion of school district coaches, custodians, or event coordinator to prepare and set-up equipment for DYB practices / games.
Ø We WILL NOT confront; harass; disrespect, complain to; or threaten any school district coach, employee or Fellowship Church representative AT ANY TIME, especially if there is a delay in the start of a DYB event.
Ø Failure to adhere to this WILL RESULT IN EJECTION, SUSPENSION and POSSIBLE BAN FROM DYB ACTIVITIES for the season or longer.
9. We WILL close the exterior doors to the SCHOOLS / Fellowship Church after entering or exiting DYB activities.
10. Coaches / players WILL NOT enter gyms before the start time of their scheduled practice times to avoid overcrowding.
11. Coaches WILL end practices at the scheduled end time, even if start time was delayed, and promptly move their team off the court so the next team starts on time. After practice team meetings MUST BE completed OFF THE PLAYING COURT.
12. DYB has ZERO tolerance for unsportsmanlike, inappropriate, disrespectful, threatening verbal / physical behavior.
13. DYB Coaches, officials/referees, board members, school district and Fellowship Church representatives have the authority to eject / dismiss anybody from the premises for unsportsmanlike, disrespectful, threatening verbal / physical behavior directed at spectators, coaches, referees, officials, board members, or school district / church staff.
14. Any person ejected from a DYB event by an official or board member must leave the building and property immediately!
Ø Any individual ejected is suspended for a minimum from attending the next DYB game. More serious consequences such as suspension for multiple games, ban for the rest of the season or a lifetime ban for DYB activities can occur depending on the nature of the incident.
Ø All children (including players and non-players) must leave with the ejected individual if the individual is the only LEGAL guardian present for the DYB event.
Ø Failure to leave the building and property when directed to do so will result in the game / practice being stopped, forfeit given to the opposing team, and a LIFETIME BAN from all DYB activities and law enforcement contacted.
15. DYB has ZERO TOLERANCE for harassment of GAME OFFICIALS (referees) at ANY TIME.
We WILL NOT verbally criticize, harass, approach, question, criticize, discuss or confront DYB officials / referees prior to, during, or after a game or practice.
Ø Before you act, please think of the consequences! DYB takes this very seriously!
Ø Failure to comply will result in ejection, suspension for the next game or possible ban pending the nature of the actions. However, if you physically APPROACH an OFFICIAL, YOU WILL BE BANNED!
Ø A second offense will result in a ban for the season, or possible lifetime, pending the nature of the actions.
Ø 3rd through 8h grade divisions use PIAA certified officials. They have an extensive knowledge of PIAA / NFHS rules for basketball. DYB follows PIAA / NFHS basketball rules which governs middle and high school levels. There are a few exceptions that are DYB specific in order to foster development at the youth level. Please note that all PIAA / NFHS rules are not the same as college or pro rules. DYB game rules are issued to all coaches and available to view on website.
Ø 1st/2nd grade division: Goal is to have PIAA officials; however, volunteer high school basketball players or DYB approved volunteers may be used. Games may have to be occasionally officiated by coaches.
16. DYB has ZERO TOLERANCE for harassment of COACHES at ANY TIME. (Read # 15 – just substitute COACH for official.)
17. We WILL support all COACHES positively. We understand coaches are VOLUNTEERS, not paid, have varying levels of knowledge / expertise in basketball and are devoting a significant amount of their personal life / time not only at practices and games but also at home spending hours making practice plans, line-ups for games.
Ø Remember! DYB would not exist without volunteer coaches!
18. We WILL respect coaches and their authority during games / practices:
Ø We WILL NOT COACH our child from the sideline or stands. Players must listen to their COACHES.
Ø We WILL NOT approach our child while they are on the court or sideline unless requested by the coach/official.
Ø 1st/2nd/3rd/4th Grade: We WILL NOT stand directly in/on TEAM SIDELINE (behind team ok) / in HUDDLES during games.
Ø 5th/6th/7th/8th Grade: We WILL NOT sit on or directly behind the team bench during games. (Only coaches)
Ø We WILL NOT stand, sit along the end line between the FREE THROW LANE lines located under the basket.
Failure to adhere may result in ejection, suspension for next game or possibly a ban pending the nature of the actions.
19. Players who show unsportsmanlike, disrespectful, threatening verbal / physical behavior directed at other players, coaches, referees, officials, board members, school custodians or spectators are subject to ejection, suspension, ban depending on the nature of the offense.
20. Each player has varying levels of knowledge / skill in basketball. We WILL support all players positively regardless of skill level.
21. As a parent and / or coach, we WILL learn the DYB game rules (issued to coaches and also found on website)
22. We WILL respect the Dallas School District and Fellowship Church facilities / grounds and clean up after ourselves, children, players and team. No food or drink is allowed in the school or gyms during practices, games, or other activities.
23. We WILL NOT leave our child(ren), who is not a DYB participant, alone / unsupervised / unattended while on Dallas School District and Fellowship Church property during practices and games. They must remain with us at all times. They cannot sit on top of bleachers, roam/run/bounce balls in the lobby/halls, climb windows, be alone in the bathroom, etc.
24. We WILL NOT possess weapons of any kind on school grounds. Exemptions include those persons specifically approved / allowed by school district policy, Fellowship policy, and state / federal law, for certain professions such as law enforcement.
25. We WILL NOT possess or use illegal drugs, alcohol, smoke or vape during any DYB activities or on Dallas School District or Fellowship Church property.
26. We WILL NOT use profanity, obscene gestures, taunting, or threatening actions / words towards any individual.
27. We WILL NOT attend DYB activities if ill. If a player is too ill to attend/stay in school, then they cannot attend DYB activities.
28. We WILL inform DYB, the coach of any disability, ailment or medical issues that may affect the safety of our child or others.
29. We WILL teach our child to be respectful, to play by the rules and resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence.
30. We WILL promote emotional / physical well-being of all players ahead of any desire we may have for our child / team to win.
31. We WILL teach our child that doing one’s best is more important than winning, or outcome of a game or his/her performance.
32. We WILL emphasize skill development and practices and how they benefit our child over winning.
33. We WILL praise our children and other participants for competing fairly and trying hard.
34. We WILL NOT ridicule / yell at our child or other participants for making a mistake or if their team wins or loses a game.
35. We WILL demonstrate and teach our child to enjoy success but also the importance of being humble and supportive of others.
36. We WILL ensure the ride home after the game/practice is positive for our child without analyzing / ridiculing their performance.
37. We WILL notify the coach with as much advanced notice as possible if our child will be late, cannot attend a practice or game.
38. We WILL pick up our child on time after all league events end.
39. We WILL be a positive role model for all children and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect, courtesy, and positive support for all players, coaches, officials, referees, custodians and spectators at all DYB events.
40. We WILL NOT engage in unsportsmanlike conduct such as booing, taunting; refusing to shake hands.
41. We WILL NOT demonstrate or encourage behaviors which endanger the health and well-being of others.
42. We WILL treat players, coaches, officials, referees and spectators with respect regardless of gender, race, creed, ethnicity, or ability.
