12.  How is Dallas Youth Basketball funded?

Through registration fees for players, fundraising and on the generosity of individuals and/or business sponsorships. Please see information during registration.   Both are integral in meeting our goal is to keep registration fees as low as possible so that the cost of registration fee WILL NEVER be an obstacle for any child who wants to participate in our organization.

Please note that sponsorships allow us to keep registration as low as possible and provide discounts to families.  Any family who registers 2 children from the same immediate family receives a discount for the second child. We provide a 100% discount for the 3rd and any additional children from the same immediate family.  In addition, we provide scholarships to families in need.

13.  I want to sign up but my child participates in other activities.  If I register them to play, can I get a refund if DYB schedule conflicts with their other activities?

Refunds are generally not available after close of registration. We rely on the registration totals in order to plan our season.  Our volunteers put a lot of their own personal time and commitment during registration, ensuring we have enough coaches, planning / participation in skills assessment, creating teams, completion of the draft and creating practice and game schedules.  This is completed over an 8–12-week period.

However, we understand there can be extenuating circumstances.  DYB will consider all refund requests on a case-by-case basis. Requests must be emailed to [email protected]. In the event of a refund, we do not refund credit, debit card processing fees, service fees nor additional fees for services or plans offered by Sports Connect paid at initial registration.

14.  Does Dallas Youth Basketball accept Sponsorships and / or donations?

Yes!  DYB relies on and appreciates all sponsors!   Dallas Youth Basketball is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Contributions to our program are tax deductible according to IRS code.

We rely on the generosity of the community, including those individuals and businesses who provide sponsorships for our organization.  Unfortunately, registration fees alone do not cover all the costs of operation.  Sponsorships help us to continue to provide a high-quality, affordable program for the youth who live in the Dallas School District. Without sponsorships we would be forced to raise the price of registration.

Individuals or businesses that provide sponsorships have their names placed on one team's jerseys and are listed on our website. Please contact us with any questions at
[email protected]

A team jersey will be provided for games and is their jersey to keep after the season is over. Please note that for safety reasons, no jewelry is allowed to be worn during practices and games.  It is a PIAA rule which is the organization that governs Pennsylvania school sports.

3rd/4th Grade Boys and Girls: 8.5-feet                        All other grades play at 10 feet.

20.  What rules does DYB use when playing?

DYB follows most PIAA rules but has some custom rules to benefit the younger age of our players. These will be issued to coaches prior to the season and can be found on our website.

DYB uses PIAA certified referees for all games for 3rd through 8th grade divisions. 1st/2nd grade division may use volunteers and/or PIAA certified referees.

All teams in the 3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th Grade divisions make the playoffs at the end of the season with a chance to advance to DYB Championship Sunday in March.

21.  What can I and my child expect as far as playing time during games?

Rules will be handed to coaches and can be found on our website. In BRIEF, not an all-inclusive summary:

1st/2nd Grade Division:

Each game has two halves.  There are three, 5-minute periods per half (6 periods total).

Players
must play a minimum of three full periods unless late, sick, injured, fouls out or gets disqualified.

3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th Grade Division:

Each game is 4 quarters.  They are 8 minutes in length for all grades except 7th/8th grade which are 9 minutes long.

Players must play a minimum of two full quarters unless late, sick, injured, fouls out or gets disqualified.

Other exceptions: Players may play less than 2 quarters due to:

·         Unsportsmanlike behavior.  Please note it is the discretion of the coach / referee / DYB board member present.

·         If a player arrives after the first quarter begins then they are only required to play 1 quarter.

·         If a player arrives after the 3rd quarter has begun, then he or she is not required to play at all.

22.  Can I request a specific coach or request my child play on another team with one of their friends?

No, except for the instances below. We DO NOT accommodate requests for players to be assigned with specific coaches nor for players to be placed on the same team as other players. We do this in order to keep the teams as competitively balanced as possible.  3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade players are drafted. 1st/2nd grade players are assigned to teams.

EXCEPTION FOR HEAD COACHES only: If your child is playing in the same grade / gender division that you are a HEAD COACH, then that player will be assigned to the team you are coaching.

EXCEPTIONS FOR SIBLINGS PLAYING IN THE SAME DIVISION: (see sibling accommodation below).

23.  I have more than one child registering for the same grade / division. Will they be on different teams?

1st/2nd Grade CO-ED: siblings will be assigned to the same team.

3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th Grade Divisions:

Siblings of the same gender who are in the same grade division ARE assigned to the same team unless parents request otherwise.

24. Can I request specific practice nights and times or game days / times for my child due to personal scheduled and other extra-curricular
       activities
?

No. Your child would have to attend practices / play games as assigned on their team schedule.  Teams will not be finalized until at the end of October. Practice schedules will not be available until then or early November.

25.  I believe my child is a highly skilled player than his peers.  Can my child play at a higher grade level?

No.  Regardless of skill level we believe it’s best to have players compete at their grade level and play with and against their peers / friends. Both the higher and less skilled player can certainly teach each other about different aspects of basketball and more importantly life skills such being a good teammate, good sportsmanship, inclusion of others, dealing with frustration / disappointment, conflict, etc.  It’s not about the level of skill, the wins, records, etc.  It’s also more than about the game of basketball such the memories, fun, socialization, etc.

With the above being said, there are other opportunities for “higher skilled players” within our league for 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade divisions.

26.  What locations are practices and games held?

1st/ 2nd Grade CO-ED Division:  Held in the gym at Fellowship Church.

3rd/4th and 5th/6th Grade Divisions:  Held in the gyms of the Wycallis Primary Center and Dallas Intermediate School.

7th/8th Grade Divisions: Games are held at Wycallis Primary Center. This division DOES NOT practice due to middle school sports and after school extra-curricular activities.

27.  How do I know if practices or games are canceled?

Coaches will ALWAYS contact all parents / guardians when practices or games are canceled. Information will also be posted on our Facebook page.

DYB does not have any practices or games when the Dallas School District is closed for a holiday(s) as well as when the school district closes for an entire day or dismisses early for inclement weather. However, if the school is operating on an early morning delay, then DYB activities are still on for that night. DYB sometimes has to cancel activities when inclement weather occurs after school hours or when games are played on the weekend.

Occasionally cancellations will also occur if the Dallas School District is in need of the gyms for school based extracurricular such as concerts, plays, book fairs, etc.

28.  How do I know which team my child will be on and which practice and game schedule to follow?

Practice and game schedule cannot be completed until after registration is completed / closed. We need to have the total number of players, teams and ensure we have enough volunteer head coaches before devising a schedule.

1st/ 2nd Grade CO-ED Division:

Schedules are generally available by first / second week of November.  However, you WILL NOT KNOW which team schedule to follow until DYB assigns all players to a team. Afterwards, the coach will contact the parent / guardian, and you will follow that team’s practice and game schedule.

3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th Grade Division:

Schedules are generally available by end of October.  However, you WILL NOT KNOW which team schedule to follow until after the player draft is completed.  After the draft is completed, the coach will contact the parent / guardian, and you will follow that team’s practice and game schedule.

29.  When are practices held?

Please give the head coach as much advanced notice as possible if your child will be late or absent from practices.  DO NOT be late in picking up your child from practice. We cannot guarantee practices will not fall on a CCD night.  Practice schedules are dependent on school gym availability and the number of players registered and coaches available and can vary season to season.

Parents / guardians should wait until their children are let into the school.

School doors will be locked until the first practice of the evening, opening 15 minutes before the first practice.

Coaches will be responsible for letting their players into the school. All head and assistant coaches have to pass a background check.  We request each team have at least 1 to 2 “TEAM HELPERS”.  Parents / guardians may volunteer position as a TEAM HELPER (must complete a DYB Volunteer Background Check Form and be approved) to supervise the school door to assist with letting our team’s players, the next group of players / coaches into the building for practices. Ø  7th/8th Grade Boys:  Sundays between 11AM and 2PM

Games canceled due to weather, school closure, etc. are generally not rescheduled due to gym availability.

Please be respectful of the time and effort our volunteer coaches put into planning and making lineups for games to ensure that all players get appropriate playing time and that the team has enough players to play a game. It’s not easy for coaches when they are not aware when players will be late or absent. Coaches need as much advanced notice as possible if your child will be late or absent from a game.  They may need to contact other teams for substitute players if their own team will not have enough players to play a game.

31.  How are players assigned to teams?

1st/2nd grade division CO-ED:

Ø  Players are assigned to teams.  There IS NOT a draft.

3rd/4th grade, 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade division:

Ø  Volunteer coaches DRAFT players for their team.  Girls and boys divisions have separate drafts.

Ø  The player draft is held after skills assessment are completed generally in the third or last week of October.

32.  What is Skill Assessment?

3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th Grade Division:

3rd/4th and 5th/6th Grade Boys and Girls will have their own separate sessions on 2 different days.  7th/8th Grade Boys and Girls will have their own separate session, only  on 1 day.

All registered players must attend at least one skills assessment (players can attend both if they wish) during which coaches will observe players perform various skill and drills such as dribbling, layups and shooting. Skills assessments are held generally in the evening between 6PM and 9PM depending on grade level during the second or third week of October. Coaches use the skills assessment to draft players in order to field competitive teams. All registered players will be drafted to a team.

Families must pick their fundraising raffle tickets up at Skills Assessment (except 1st/2nd and  7th/8th grade players)

1st/2nd GRADE DIVISION:

There IS NOT a skills assessment for this division. Players will be assigned to teams.

33.  When will I know which team my child is on?

1st/2nd Grade CO-ED Division:

Ø  Head coaches will contact all parents when all players are assigned to teams.  At this time the parent / guardian will follow that team’s practice and game schedule.

3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th Grade Division:

Ø  Head coaches will contact all parents the night of or the day after the draft is completed. At this time the parent / guardian will follow that team’s practice and game schedule.

34.  Are all players registered guaranteed to be placed on a team?

Our organization is 100% dependent on volunteer Head Coaches.  Therefore we need to have enough HEAD COACHES in order to accommodate all registered players.

Our board members work hard to ensure all registrants will have a team to play on and to ensure players receive enough attention in practice as well as playing time in games. In order to do so we like to keep each team’s roster no more than 8 and no less than 7. However, if needed, roster sizes can go as high as 10 per team if we do not have enough HEAD COACHES.  As roster size increases, playing time / opportunity decreases.

If we DO NOT receive enough volunteers for HEAD COACH positions, then a waiting list will have to be implemented.

Those who registered later / last would be placed on the waiting list. Waiting list players will be offered registration based if other registered players withdraw or additional head coaches are obtained.

Please note that if you are selected to be a head coach by the DYB board, it does guarantee your child a registration slot in the event we have to create a waiting list due to a lack of head coaches.

Any registrant placed on a wait list and not assigned to a team will receive a refund.

35.  How do I sign up to be a volunteer head coach or assistant coach?

We are always in need of volunteer Head Coaches.  Please consider volunteering! You may do so during the registration process; message us vour Facebook page prior to registration; or contact the commissioner of your grade / gender division.

There can be as many assistant coaches that the Head Coach would like for practices. However, during games each team is limited to one Head
Coach and ONE Assistant Coach on the sideline.
Assistant Coaches must remain seated during games.  Only head coaches can call time outs walk /
stand in the coach’s box.

Head coaches must attend both SKILLS ASSESMENT sessions in Mid-October and the PLAYER DRAFT at end of OCTOBER (or appoint a
designee in their absence for both)

All volunteer head and assistant coaches need to complete the DYB Basketball Volunteer Application / Background Check Form and successfully pass the background check.  Then must be approved by the DYB board members.

Please note that if you are selected to be a head coach by the DYB board, it does guarantee your child a registration slot in the event we have to create waiting list due to a lack of head coaches.

DYB appreciates all past and current volunteers.  However, regardless of previous appointments as a volunteer, DYB IS NOT obligated to appoint any         person to a volunteer position.

36.  I want to volunteer as a coach, but I do not have any children playing for DYB.  Can I volunteer to coach?

Absolutely! You may email us at [email protected]

or inquire via our Facebook page or website prior to registration; sign up during the registration process; or contact the board or any of the commissioners.  We’ve had past DYB players come back to coach, High School Players, coaches who coached before but no longer have children playing in DYB, etc.

37.  I want to coach, but I want to coach with a specific person.  Can I make this selection at registration?

3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th Grade Division:

No.  We DO NOT ALLOW a head coach to select an assistant coach who will have a child playing in the same grade / gender division prior to registration.  We do this in order to keep the teams as competitively balanced as possible.  If you wish to coach with a specific person with a child in the same grade / gender division then the head coach can attempt to draft that person’s child (if still available at the time of your draft pick / slot) for your team and then can choose that person to be their assistant coach.

There are instances where a coach may be allowed to select their assistant coach if the assistant does not have a child playing in the in the same grade / gender division or does not have a child playing at all in DYB.  Examples include but are not limited to: spouse, partner, relative, friend, etc.

1st/2nd Grade CO-ED Division:

No. We DO NOT ALLOW head coaches to automatically select their assistant before team rosters are released.  Assistant coaches need to come from the parents / guardians of the players assigned to your team.

38.  How do I select / get assigned my assistant coach?

A list of volunteers for assistant coaches will be available.  Head coaches review the list and select one after the draft is completed, generally a parent or legal guardian from their team. If there are not enough volunteers for assistant coaches, then the head coaches can ask / select a parent from their team.

Be sure to find a reliable assistant coach to coach your team if you are not available.  We cannot switch games.

All assistant coaches need to successfully pass a background check and afterwards must be approved by the DYB board members.

39.  I want to be a coach. Can I request to practice on certain days and times of the week?

Generally – NO but we may be able to do it if there is a very low number of requests. Unfortunately, it is difficult for us to accommodate these requests. We get many requests, and it is not possible to meet all of them.  We generate a practice schedule based on gym availability and total number of teams in the league.

40.  I am unable to volunteer as head or assistant coach. Are there other opportunities for me to volunteer to help?

Yes.

·         TEAM HELPER
Each coach / team could benefit from TEAM HELPER(S) to assist with team tasks such as helping supervise the school door to assist with    letting their team’s players, the next group of players / coaches into the building, and other tasks. They are not coaches but may also help
coaches during practices as needed. TEAM HELPERS MAY ATTEND 3rd to 6th Grade Practices. TEAM HELPERS refer to those
volunteers who are not coaches but there to assist / be present in the gym for practices.
There is a Limit of TWO TEAM HELPERS
PER TEAM at practices. TEAM HELPERS must complete and return the DALLAS YOUTH BASKETBALL VOLUNTEER AND
BACKGROUND CHECK FORM which includes a review for sex offender registries, child abuse and criminal history records.
RETURNING volunteers must complete even if completed last season.

·         Sponsor a team.

42.  What does the Head Coach do if they won’t have enough players for a game?

DYB does not generally cancel games for a lack of players as there are several options available to pursue.

Each division has a board member who is the commissioner. Please contact them in these instances and notify them if you cannot find players to call up as below. They will assist and direct you as to what to do or contact the President for direction.

Head coaches will be supplied with a roster of younger players that can be called if you have 6 players or less for a game.  The playing time for the player(s) called up cannot exceed the playing time of your regular rostered players.  You may not call up the same player(s) in two consecutive games. You must alternate your call-ups.

43.  Trash: Responsibility of parents, players and coaches:

All parents, players and coaches are to look over their sideline / standing area and bleachers after EACH GAME, pick up trash and dispose in the garbage before leaving. Remember we are guests of the DALLAS SCHOOL DISTRICT / FELLOWSHIP CHURCH and need to be respectful of the gyms.

44.  Supervision of Children (Siblings, Friends, Family Members, ETC) Who ARE NOT PLAYING:

All children who are not playing in a DYB game must be in direct supervision of their parent / guardian IN THE GYM.  They are not allowed to be in the lobby, bathrooms, etc. of the DALLAS SCHOOLS / FELLOWSHIP CHURCH unsupervised.  There is absolutely no running, horseplay, playing with basketballs, climbing windows, etc.  Please remember that we are guests of the school district /church and do not want to lose our gym privileges.  Failure to comply will result in dismissal from the premises.
