What should I expect from Kalama Soccer Club when I register my child?
Parents should expect Kalama Soccer Club registration provides for the registration system, team placement, field usage/prep/maintenance, practice gear and supplies for the season, scheduling of 10-12 weeks of practices, scheduling of 8 weeks of games, background checking of all coaches/volunteers/adults, training/instruction of coaches and referees, uniforms for each season (shirt, shorts, socks) and a seasonal photographer, etc. All of these things take many volunteers to ensure Kalama's children have access to fun, safe and positive soccer. This program is a volunteer only program. You should expect to be present for games/practices approximately 1-hour, three times each week throughout the season. You may need to volunteer as a coach or assistant, to ensure your child has a team to play on (Kalama Soccer Club does not employ a coaching staff). Seasonal events, such as fair, jamboree, scrimmages and game days may need volunteers to help set up, paint fields, move goals etc. Please reach out to Kalama Soccer Club to participate in your children's' sports.
I requested a team/player for my child to be assigned with but was not placed with them. What can I do?
Please understand, children are first registered by their date of birth, team space and requests are considered as space and availability allow, in the order they are registered. They are not guaranteed. If you believe your request was overlooked and there is still room to move them, please contact the Kalama Soccer Club Registrar.
When do we hear from the coach or start practice?
Coaches Meetings take place approximately 3 weeks prior to games, and you should hear from your coach with practice schedule and important dates for the upcoming season. These dates change each season based on board, coach, and volunteer availability and weather. Please be patient and reach out to the Registrar or Coach Liaison for any concerns. You should expect practice on 2 week-day evenings and one game per week. Each season MAY see a few weekday games (daylight depending), but should expect the majority of games on Saturdays.
As a parent, what should I expect at games?
Parents are the praise center of any sport. At Kalama Soccer Club, we are a praise-only program, helping to eliminate the confusion and negativity in youth sports. The coaches and referees will always be a source of constructive criticism, training and working on the next thing. The parents are needed for encouragement and praise. The coaches, referees, board members and volunteers are getting training and instruction on how to coach your child to learn the game of soccer and how to love it. We need your help to keep the children engaged and uplifted. Please ensure your child arrives ~30 minutes prior to game time, they are in their uniform (with cleats and shin guards) and water bottles. Parents should plan to coordinate snacks for games (age-dependent) and plan for a season-end party or celebration.
My child's team doesn't have a coach and needs a volunteer but I have never coached before. How can I help?
Kalama Youth Soccer and CYSA offer many clinics, resources, coaching packets and we encourage use of coaching Apps, YouTube and other online sources to provide you the best ability to learn soccer and how to coach your kids. Kalama Soccer Club board members can also mentor or aid in getting you started, if needed. We often can help getting assistant coaches and work with the players at Kalama High School to ensure each team has the ability to learn, play and love soccer. Don't feel nervous, try it and we will help you along the way!
What do I do if I think a team, player or referee isn't following the rules?
Kalama Soccer Club and CYSA are constantly striving to ensure all players have access to good information, skill building and understanding of the game. Rules for individual ages/divisions are posted on our websites, we host clinics for coaches, referees and volunteers to learn more or discuss standards of play and learn about the game. Please look out for those dates on our websites and attend. If you are familiarized with the rules and see that one of our volunteers is struggling with these standards, please contact Tanaja Gravina (CYSA Head Scheduler/KYS Registrar), Cassondra Rosales (Kelso Registrar/CYSA Head Registrar), Amy Clark (Kalama Referees) or Deadea Brickert (CYSA Referee Assignor/LSC-VP/Discipline).
I saw/experienced something during a game or practice that the Club should be aware of, what do I do?
Every coach and board member has Praise and Incident Report forms. Please do not hesitate to fill one out and submit this to the Kalama Soccer Club. If you are not comfortable with this, email submissions are also acceptable.
