How to Play & Coach

The year everything gets a little more real โ€” goalkeepers, bigger fields, and real team play. Here's everything you need to coach U8 with confidence.

๐ŸŸ๏ธ

What a U8 Game Looks Like

U8 is a step up from the youngest groups โ€” you'll see real positions, a goalkeeper in the net, and kids starting to understand that soccer involves more than just chasing the ball. Games are still small-sided and fun, but there's real structure now.

โ„น๏ธ Rethrows and re-kicks are still allowed at U8
Just like U5โ€“U7, if a player's throw-in or kick doesn't go in-bounds correctly at U8, the referee will give them another try. It's a teaching moment, not a turnover. Kalama follows CYSA policy here โ€” we'd rather kids learn the right way than penalize the mistake.
๐ŸŽฏ Free Kicks

All free kicks are indirect at U8 โ€” the ball must be touched by a second player before it can go in the goal. No direct free kicks, no penalty kicks yet.

๐ŸŸก Yellow & Red Cards

Cards are not issued at U8. Referees use verbal warnings and teaching moments instead. The goal is always to educate, not punish.

๐Ÿฅ… Goal Kicks & Corners

Goal kicks and corner kicks are in play at U8. Players must give the kicker appropriate space โ€” typically 5 yards โ€” before the ball is in play.

๐Ÿ™Œ Throw-ins

Throw-ins are in play. Two hands over the head, both feet on the ground at the moment of release. Rethrows allowed for technique issues โ€” teaching moment, not a foul.

๐Ÿ†•

What's New at U8

If your player came up from U5/U6/U7, they'll notice some big changes this year. Here's what's different โ€” and why it matters.

NEW THIS YEAR ๐Ÿฅ… Goalkeeper
NEW THIS YEAR ๐Ÿ“ Bigger Field
NEW THIS YEAR ๐Ÿ‘ฅ 5v5 Teams
NEW THIS YEAR โšฝ Size 4 Ball
NEW THIS YEAR ๐Ÿ“ Real Positions
๐Ÿฅ… The Goalkeeper โ€” U8's Biggest Change

For the first time, one player on each team plays goalkeeper. The GK can use their hands to stop the ball inside the goal area. This is exciting for kids who want to try a unique role โ€” and it means the rest of the team needs to start thinking about defending as a group, not just every player chasing the ball.

At U8, it's normal to rotate the goalkeeper role so every player gets a chance to try it. No player should be "stuck" in goal all season. Encourage every kid to give it a shot โ€” some find they love it!

๐Ÿ’ก First-time coaching note on positions: U8 players are just starting to understand staying in their area of the field. Don't expect tight positional discipline โ€” you'll see plenty of "everyone chase the ball" still happening. That's normal and fine. Use drills and gentle reminders to nudge them toward spacing, but don't over-coach it. The game itself is the best teacher.
๐Ÿ“

Positions on a 5v5 Field

In a 5v5 game, each team has 5 players on the field: a goalkeeper and 4 field players. There's no set formation at U8 โ€” most teams play with 2 defenders and 2 midfielders/forwards in front of the GK, but keeping it loose is fine at this age.

๐Ÿฅ…
Goalkeeper
1 player

Protects the goal and can use their hands inside the goal area. The only player who can touch the ball with their hands.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ
Defenders
1โ€“2 players

Stay closer to their own goal and work to stop the other team from getting shots. First to put pressure on the ball near your goal.

โšก
Midfielders / Forwards
2โ€“3 players

Cover the middle and attacking half. Help on defense and push forward to create shots. At U8, these roles often blend together.

โ„น๏ธ Should I use a strict formation?
At U8, less is more. A simple conversation before the game โ€” "You two start back by our goal, you two start up near their goal" โ€” is plenty. Fancy formations come later. What matters at this age is that kids start understanding that spreading out makes the game better for everyone.
๐ŸŒŸ

Season Goals for U8

U8 is about turning individual skills into team actions. Players are ready to understand simple concepts like passing to a teammate, creating space, and defending together. Keep the bar realistic and celebrate small victories โ€” these are still 7 and 8 year olds learning to love the game.

1
Pass to a Teammate

Recognize when a teammate is open and choose to pass instead of always dribbling. Even one successful assist per game is worth celebrating.

2
Spread Out on the Field

Start to understand that being spread out creates more space for everyone โ€” instead of 9 kids running to the same spot.

3
Defend the Goal

Learn to pressure the ball and get between the attacker and the goal. First team defending concepts โ€” blocking angles, not just chasing.

4
Support Your Teammates

Move to an open space when a teammate has the ball so they have somewhere to pass. Creating options is a key skill at U8.

5
Try the Goalkeeper Role

Every player should get a chance in goal. It builds empathy for the position and helps outfield players understand defending better.

6
Have Fun & Keep Coming Back

The biggest goal at every age. A player who loves the game at 8 will still be playing at 18. Keep it joyful.

๐ŸŽ“

The U8 Coaching Approach

The practice plans used for U8 drills (from MA Youth Soccer) are built around a specific coaching method: instead of telling players what to do, coaches ask questions and let kids discover the answers themselves. Here's why that matters โ€” and what it looks like.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Guided Discovery โ€” The Questioning Approach

At U8, players are old enough to think through simple problems. Rather than shouting instructions from the sideline ("Pass it! Move! Get open!"), try asking questions during a pause in the drill:

"What should you do if your teammate is being pressured?"
"Where do you need to be so your partner can pass to you?"
"What did you try? Did it work? What might you try differently?"

When kids figure something out themselves, they own it. It sticks better and builds more confident players in the long run. You don't have to have all the answers โ€” your job is to ask the right questions and let them play.

๐Ÿ“‹ U8 Practice Structure (60 minutes)

Every U8 session in this guide follows the same 3-part structure:

1. Free Play (20 min) โ€” Players arrive and immediately start playing. No instruction. Let them explore. The coach sets up the environment but stays out of the way. This is NOT wasted time โ€” it builds confidence and creativity.

2. Core Activity (18 min) โ€” The main drill for the day. Usually a small-sided game (2v2, 3v3) with a specific tactical focus. Run in intervals with short breaks. Use the questioning approach here.

3. 4v4 Game (22 min) โ€” A real game with the session's concept in mind. Let them play. Pause only to ask questions โ€” never to lecture.

Remember: You do not need to be a soccer expert to coach U8 well. Your enthusiasm, consistency, and ability to create a safe and fun environment matter far more than tactical knowledge. The drills below are designed so anyone can run them with confidence.
๐ŸŽฏ

Skills & Drills

These 12 practice activities follow the MA Youth Soccer U8 season plan โ€” one per week, building concepts week by week from dribbling and passing all the way to defending and team tactics. Each drill has a scaled version: easier for struggling players, harder for those ready for more.
