About Team Structure at U5โ€“U7

At the youngest age groups, how teams are formed can look a little different from season to season depending on registration numbers. Here's what that might mean for your child.

โ„น๏ธ How rosters are formed at U5โ€“U7

Kalama Soccer Club serves a small, tight-knit community, and our youngest divisions sometimes have just enough kids to fill a team or two. Because of that, you may see any of the following at this age level โ€” and all of them are completely normal:

U5 teams may be coed (boys and girls together on the same team) โ€” this is common and developmentally appropriate at this age. Kids at U5 are focused entirely on fun and first touches, not competition.

U5/U6 combined teams may be formed if registration numbers call for it. Age gaps at this stage are small and the skill level is similar enough that this works well in practice.

U6/U7 combined teams may also be formed as a gendered or coed group depending on the season's numbers.

Our goal is always to make sure every child gets to play โ€” not to turn anyone away because of a roster technicality. If you have questions about your child's team placement, please reach out to Coach Liaison Shawna.
๐ŸŸ๏ธ

What a Game Looks Like

Games at this age are all about movement, smiles, and getting comfortable with the ball. Don't expect tactical soccer โ€” expect a swarm of kids chasing one ball and having the time of their lives. That's perfect.

No goalkeepers, no goal areas, no offside. At U5โ€“U7 the game is intentionally simplified so kids focus on one thing: touching the ball. Every player is a field player.

Throw-ins are used at all ages including U5. Rethrows are allowed at U5 through U8 โ€” if a child does it wrong, have them try again. It's a teaching moment, not a foul. Keep it positive and move on quickly.
โฑ๏ธ Game Structure

Four 8-minute quarters with breaks between each. Use those breaks for encouragement โ€” not strategy. Short periods keep attention and energy high.

๐Ÿ”„ Restarts

Throw-ins on the sideline. Goal kicks from near the goal line. Rethrows and rekicks are allowed U5โ€“U8 โ€” teach correct technique calmly and positively.

๐Ÿƒ No Scorekeeping

CYSA recreational soccer at this age does not emphasize score. Celebrate every kick, every run, every attempt โ€” not just goals.

๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Expect "Beehive Soccer"

All kids swarm the ball โ€” that's completely normal at this age. Their brains aren't wired for spatial awareness yet. Don't punish it. Read the callout below for how to gradually work on it.

๐Ÿ Why kids bunch โ€” and what to do about it
At U5โ€“U7, kids are drawn to the ball like magnets. This is developmentally normal โ€” they can't yet hold a mental map of the whole field while also controlling the ball and reacting to movement. Yelling "spread out!" doesn't work because they can't process it mid-play.

What does work: hot words and small games. A "hot word" is a single short command you use consistently in practice so it becomes automatic โ€” players hear it and react without thinking. Pick one or two and use them every session until they stick.

Hot words to try:
โ€ข "Scatter!" โ€” everyone runs to open space immediately (practice this like a fire drill)
โ€ข "Find your field!" โ€” look up and move away from the crowd
โ€ข "Space!" โ€” short, simple, easy to shout
โ€ข "Freeze โ€” look around!" โ€” stop play, ask every player to point to an open area, then resume

Small games that teach spacing:
โ€ข Freeze Tag Dribble โ€” players must dribble to an empty cone to "unfreeze" a teammate (forces looking up and moving to space)
โ€ข Four Corners โ€” four small goals in corners of the grid, teams score in any goal; wide spacing is rewarded naturally
โ€ข Coach Says Scatter โ€” mid-dribble, coach shouts "Scatter!" and counts to 3; anyone within arm's reach of another player does 3 toe-taps as a silly penalty

Realistic expectation: You won't fix bunching this season. But consistent use of one hot word and spacing games plants the seed. U9/U10 coaches will thank you.

Season Goals

At U5โ€“U7, winning games is not the goal. Building a love for the game is. Here's what a successful season actually looks like at this age.

01
Every child touches the ball

Every player gets plenty of ball time in practice AND games. No one stands around.

02
They want to come back

If a child finishes the season excited for next year, you've succeeded as a coach.

03
Basic dribbling control

Can they move the ball with their feet without losing it every step? That's major progress.

04
Kick with purpose

Moving from random kicking toward kicking in a direction โ€” toward a teammate or goal.

05
Listening during activity

Hearing and responding to simple instructions while moving builds the foundation for all future coaching.

06
Playing fair & having fun

Taking turns, not pushing, cheering for teammates โ€” the social skills of sport start here.

Volunteer Coach Reminder: Keep every activity to 5โ€“7 minutes max, always have a ball for every player, and use silly names for drills. "You're a rocket ship โ€” blast off to the cone!" works better than any tactical instruction at this age.

Soccer Bees
All players have a ball ยท Coned square area ยท 5 min
Mark off a square "beehive." Players dribble inside buzzing like bees. Then parents walk in as "giants" โ€” players try to tag them with their ball. Keep it silly and loud!
Let the chaos happen โ€” kids are dribbling, avoiding others, and tracking their ball all at once. That's real coordination work.

Coach Says
Every player has a ball ยท Open space ยท 5โ€“7 min
Players spread out with their ball. Coach calls commands: "dribble!", "stop!", "turn!", "faster!", "shoot!" โ€” but only when preceded by "Coach Says." Otherwise freeze with foot on ball.
Make the wrong commands fast and funny to keep them laughing. Teaches ball control AND listening at the same time.

Crocodiles
Every player has a ball ยท Two parallel lines ยท 5 min
Mark a "river" with two lines. Players dribble across while the crocodile (coach or player) tries to knock their ball away. Get tagged = become a crocodile. Last player with ball wins.
Teaches keeping head up and protecting the ball without ever using those words. One of the best drills at this age.

Gate Goals
Every player has a ball ยท 8โ€“10 cone gates ยท 5โ€“7 min
Set up 8โ€“10 small gates (two cones ~3ft apart) all over half the field. Players dribble and try to kick through as many gates as possible in one minute. Count gates out loud!
Make the gates bigger than you think. Success builds confidence. Narrow them as the season progresses.

Every player has a ball ยท Cone targets ยท 5 min
Set up cone targets around the field. Players dribble up and shoot to knock them down, yelling "OUCH!" on a hit. Coach resets targets. First to knock down all theirs wins a high five lap.
Teaches looking up, aiming, and striking with intent โ€” while being completely hilarious. Perfect energy for this age.

Rocket Launch
Small goal(s) ยท 5โ€“8 yard line ยท 5 min
Players line up 5โ€“8 yards from goal. Coach counts down "3-2-1 LAUNCH!" and each player blasts their shot into the net. Rotate quickly so everyone gets 3โ€“4 turns.
Use two goals side by side if you have enough balls. Keep lines short โ€” waiting kills energy at this age.

Skill 3: Passing & Awareness
Beginning to notice teammates โ€” the first steps toward team soccer (U6/U7 focus)
U5 Coaches Note: Don't stress about passing at U5 โ€” dribbling and kicking are enough. These drills are best introduced at U6 and U7 when kids start to understand the concept of a teammate.

Pairs Passing
One ball per pair ยท 5โ€“8 yards apart ยท 5 min
Paired players pass back and forth using the inside of the foot. Encourage proper technique. Progress to moving passes โ€” one player steps sideways before receiving.
