Become a Minnesota Rush Coach
MN Rush has a number of paid and volunteer opportunities available for you to become a coach! There are two major programs that need coaches – REC (1-9 grade) and Competitive (U9 – U19). All coaching positions are subject to successful completion of a national background check, concussion training and the SafeSport training course.
Recreation
This program meets three times per week for a total of seven weeks. This includes two practice nights per week, and a game on Saturday. The Spring Rec season takes place in the months of April, May and June. The program generally starts the week after the Rochester School District’s spring break, and the last game is typically the weekend that the Rochester School District breaks for summer. The Fall Rec season takes place in the months of September and October. The program generally starts the week after Labor Day and the last game is typically the weekend before the Rochester School District MEA break.
Age-appropriate manuals and lesson plans are provided; in addition, there is ongoing support for all grades from the MN Rush Directors of Coaching. No formal education is required, but it is recommended. We encourage current MN Rush players, non-parents and parents of players to become involved in this program. This is a volunteer position. Total time commitment varies based on the grade you are coaching.
Recommended Education
- US Youth Soccer Y module, which is provided free of charge yearly by MN Rush for grades 1-4.
- The US Soccer grass roots modules are recommended for coaches who want further education. Registration reimbursement is offered after successful completion of the course.
Competitive 
This This program starts in February/March with one or two sessions a week in the RCTC indoor dome. Outdoor training will typically start the week after the Rochester School District’s spring break with a minimum of two training sessions per week. Games will start at the beginning of May and will be during the week (league portion). The league portion of the season will be finished around early to mid July, with the remainder of July reserved for the State Tournament. A maximum of three tournaments can be scheduled by the team that will account for a total of three weekends throughout the season.
An age-appropriate curriculum is provided, as well as ongoing support from the MN Rush Directors of Coaching. Formal education is required to become a head coach in the competitive program. A minimum of two USSF Grass Roots modules (or equivalent) must be obtained prior to the start of the competitive league games. Exceptions can only be granted by the MN Rush Director of Coaching. We encourage qualified parents and non-parents of players to apply for head coaching positions.
Teams will be assigned based on a number of factors, that include, but not limited to, license level, experience, age group requested, and gender requested. This position is a paid position. Payment varies depending upon license level. Total time commitment varies based on the age group you are coaching, but would involve practices and games starting in February/March and ending In July.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Pre-season meeting with MN Rush Directors of Coaching.
- Mid-season completion of player evaluations.
- End of season formal evaluation of players that will be used in aiding the selection committee on appropriate placement of players.
- An evaluation from the MN Rush Directors of Coaching.
Required EducationA minimum of two USSF Grass Roots Modules or equivalent. Registration reimbursement is offered after successful completion of the course.
Recommended Education- U9 – U12 USSF Grass Roots Modules Certificate or equivalent. Registration reimbursement is offered after successful completion of the course.
- U13 – U15 USSF D License or equivalent. Registration reimbursement is offered after successful completion of the course.
- U16 – U19 USSF C License or equivalent. Registration reimbursement is offered after successful completion of the course.
If a coach wishes to attend training or camps to improve his/her skills, coaches should contact the Director of Coaching for approval. Reimbursement for any education other than an Grass Roots Modules will be distributed depending on availability of funds. Reimbursement for any such education will be allotted in mid- April only after the season has commenced, irrespective of when the course was attended in that fiscal year. A coach may receive only one registration reimbursement per fiscal year.

Background Check:
Club Admins, Coaches & Managers The Minnesota Youth Soccer Association requires that all adult participants complete an annual background check. All member club officials, coaches, team managers and administrators who are at least 18 years old must meet the background check requirements before they can participate in any MYSA-related activities.
Background checks are valid on a calendar year basis (January 1 through December 31). The period for completing a background check for 2020 opened on November 1, 2019. Background checks that were completed before November 1, 2019 will expire on December 31, 2019. Background checks that are completed on or after November 1, 2019 will expire on December 31, 2020.

Required Coaching Items!
Background Check
Minnesota State Law and MYSA Policy require that all adult participants have an approved background check before they participate in any MYSA activity. All Minnesota Rush coaches are required to complete a background check prior to coaching a team. Merely submitting a background check is not sufficient to meet the requirement to participate, the background check must be approved before any activity starts.
The period for completing a background check for 2020 opened on November 1, 2019. Background check completed on or after November 1, 2019 will expire on December 31, 2020.

After you submit your background check you will receive an email acknowledging your submission of it. This email will also contain the links and access code to complete the Safe Point and Concussion training courses.
Concussion Training
Minnesota State Law and MYSA Policy require that all adult participants complete the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s HEADS UP Concussion Training every three years. All coaches must print out the certificate upon completion of the course and turn it in to Minnesota Rush prior to coaching a team.

Federal Law and MYSA Policy now require that all adult participants complete SafeSport Training every two years. The training is being offered free of charge through U.S. Soccer’s onboarding link and access code. All Minnesota Rush coaches are required to complete this course before coaching a team.
