Registration for tryouts for our High School League teams will occur in January - February. Teams are finalized in March (whenever it warms up and we can get outside) if necessary.
Team selections for ages 15-20 is sometimes done by competitive tryout if we have a lot of registrations. In that case, we select teams based on tryouts at this level for several important reasons: First, the safety factor.... We want to make sure that our players have enough skill and baseball knowledge to avoid being injured. Second, teams in this league has always been rather competitive and are usually composed of JV and Varsity players from the area high schools. So in order to compete in this league, we have to make sure that our players can handle the competition and have parity with the other teams. Third, it becomes a numbers game when selecting teams.... Everyone surely can understand that if a total of 18 boys register for tryouts, it isn't feasible or fair to put all 18 players on the team. After selecting a team of 12 or 13 players, there simply aren't enough players to form an additional team. So what we must do is select the best players for the team and then we recommend the others to nearby rec councils so they can fill up their teams with decent players, too.
