Boys Travel League Basketball
The middle school boys' basketball program consists of intramural and travel league teams. These leagues offer players different levels of play based on their skills and their desired level of competition. Our goal is for every child to participate in our programs, and we are proud to be able to continue this valuable opportunity.
Boys Travel League
This league is designed for the most competitive and committed players in the Smithsburg school district. Teams will compete against top players from Washington and Frederick Counties. The season runs from November through March with skills assessments in late October. Teams will meet multiple times per week (including Saturday/Sunday) and travel to various locations for practices or games. 6th 7th and 8th grade teams participate in the Washington County Middle School Basketball League and the Mid Maryland Basketball League. Our 4th and 5th grade travel team participates in the Greencastle Basketball League.
School Report Card Grade Requirement for Washington County League:
SYA participates in the Washington County Middle School Basketball League. This league has required that all student athletes have no more than one grade below a 70%. The league requires copies of the athlete's report cards at the beginning of the season and again in January after the 2nd marking period. SYA athletes that are or become ineligible may still practice and participate in non-league games but cannot play in league games. No refunds are given for players whose grades prevent them from playing league games.
School Report Card Grade Requirement for Mid Maryland Basketball League:
SYA participates in the Mid Maryland league Basketball League. The Mid Maryland league requires student athletes to maintain their grades. Players must maintain a 2.0 G.P.A and have no failing grades (below a 60%). Grades are checked at beginning of season and again when grading period ends. No refunds will be given due to failing grades.
Registration is a two-step process:
Step 1 register for basketball assessments. No money collected at this time.
Step 2 If selected for a team player will need to log back in, accept the invitation to play and pay the registration fee by credit or debit card.
The amount of playing time each participant receives is at the discretion of the coaching staff.
Basketball Tryouts for 2023-2024 season
Tryouts will be held in the Leitersburg Ruritan Community Center 21427 Leiter Street Hagerstown MD 21742
Players wishing to tryout must have completed the online registration. No money is collected until team selection.
Elementary Tryouts
5th grade and under tryouts Thursday Oct 19th 6:00 pm until 7:00pm
Make-up tryouts Thursday Oct 19th 7:00 pm until 8:15 pm (this makeup is for any player that cannot make the time slot for their grade)
Middle School Tryouts
6th grade and under tryouts Tuesday Oct 17th 7:30pm until 9:00 pm
7th grade and under tryouts Tuesday Oct 17th 6:00 pm until 7:30pm
8th grade and under tryouts Monday Oct 16th 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm
Players, coaches, and evaluators are the only ones permitted in the gym due to limited space.
Players should remain outside until their assigned time.
They will be asked to sign-in and receive a number for identification.
Registration fee for this year is $150 for the 6th 7th and 8th grade teams
Registration fee for this year is $120 for the 4th 5th grade team playing in the Greencastle League
Payment made after assessments and team placement is made
Registration is required prior to the tryout date.
