Grade 3-8 Tackle Football
Our tackle youth football program competes in the Suburban Amateur Football League (SAFL) and we play other Western Mass communities. Many of their rules are designed to ensure the safety of your child and to guarantee enjoyment for all of those that participate in the league. For that reason, they have weight restrictions for certain positions, age limits and playing time expectations. The SAFL’s website is: www.saflfootball.com
Youth football will begin the first Monday in August and will run through late October. Football is a 3-4 day per week commitment. The children will be learning at a quick pace and because of the physical nature of the sport, their attendance and concentration is extremely important.
Visit SHYFA’s website at www.shyfa.org for more information.
Practices:
Practices will begin the first Monday in August and are Monday to Thursday until school begins and then Tuesday to Thursday nights. Some teams may take a day off in that window each week. Practices are typically held at Beachgrounds Park; some practices may also be at South Hadley High School.
Mandatory Weigh-ins:
The league holds weigh-ins for position eligibility. If the player is over the listed weight, he/she is only eligible to be a down lineman on both offense and defense and he is not eligible to play on some special team plays or carry the ball.
The weight limits are as follows (anybody over the listed weight must play the line):
3/4th grade: 80 pounds.
5/6th grade: 115 pounds.
7/8th grade: 135 pounds.
The weigh-in date will be announced closer to the season.
