Players are required to have their own soccer ball (size 3) & wear athletic clothing & cleats (must be rubber) or sneakers. Shin guards are optional.  If you do not have a ball, let us know and we will provide a limited supply for the coaches to have.

K-2 Recreation Soccer

Our K-2 Recreation Soccer program teaches players the fundamentals of soccer. They will learn skills such as dribbling, passing, throw-ins, shooting and more in a fun, non-competitive environment. They will learn to work together as a team and will grow confidence in their skills throughout the season. We partner with Granby for this program; however, all practices and games are held in South Hadley.

Practices are determined by the head coaches of each team, and we do not know the practice nights in advance of the season. If your child has other commitments, you can make note of that during the registration process. We ask that you put the days your child IS NOT available to practice in the Requests/Comments section and we will do our best to meet your request, however we cannot guarantee it. If we are unable to meet the request we can provide a full refund up until the point we order uniforms (typically 1-2 weeks after you find out your practice time). Once uniforms have been ordered we provide a refund minus the cost of the uniform.

Games are held on Saturdays & Sundays starting in late September and run through the end of October. There may occasionally be a weeknight game if a game needs to be made up and both coaches agree. Game schedules will be able to be found at: www.leaguelineup.com/shyouthsoccer

Grade 3-6 Recreation Soccer

Our Grade 3-6 Recreation Soccer program plays in the Quabbin Valley Soccer League with towns such as Chicopee, Wilbraham, Belchertown & East Longmeadow. All practices will be in town as well as half of the games. The other half of games will be in the other communities we play against.

*Please note that each age group needs at least 10 players to register in order to have a team. If we are unable to field a team in an age group, your child may have an option to play in the Roots League if there are open spots on a team, or they may transfer to another sport. If neither of these options work we can also give a full refund.

Grade 3/4 Soccer - Split by gender
Requirements:
Rubber cleats
Shin Guards
Size 4 Soccer Ball (optional)
Rec Dept with provide a game shirt, shorts and matching socks

Grade 3-8 Roots Soccer

Roots soccer is for those in Grades 3-8. These teams play in the Roots Soccer League (http://www.rootssoccerleague.com/). The league is made up of teams from Western Massachusetts.  Teams are split by grade and gender (Grade 3 Girls, Grade 3 Boys, Grade 4 Girls, Grade 4 Boys, etc.).

If we have enough kids to have more than one team in an age group, tryouts and/or evaluations may be required.  We do not hold tryouts/evaluations (if needed) until 5th grade. A decision on whether tryouts/evaluations are needed will not be made until the registration period closes. The Roots league has maximum roster sizes that we must abide by. Due to this late registrations may not be accepted if teams are full or if tryout/evaluations were needed.

Practice times are determined by the coach of the team the player gets assigned to, and we will not know coaches and/or practice times before the beginning of the season. We typically only have 1-2 teams per age group in this league - practice schedules are not as flexible as in the K-2 age group.

Games after Labor Day and run through the middle of November. They are played primarily on Saturdays with a few week night games. Half the games will be played in South Hadley and the other half will be played in other towns. For grades 3-4, a jamboree will be held at the beginning of the season, for grades 5-8 playoffs will be held for the top 4 teams in each division. Game schedules can be found at: http://www.rootssoccerleague.com/

The Roots Soccer League requires parents to accept their players onto the official rosters and upload a head shot of the player. Players are not allowed to play unless this information is provided. More information will be provided via email closer to the start of the season.

Equipment Requirements:

  • Rubber cleats

  • Shin Guards

  • Soccer Ball (optional) - Grade 3-6: Size #4; Grade 7-8: Size #5

  • Soccer Uniforms - Families are required to purchase their own uniform (more information will be provided in the confirmation email)
